I get what you're saying, but we're gonna be over the luxury tax either way, so we won't be able to add free agents in any case. Precisely I'd be ok with getting Felton because it'd open another way for us to get players, by having different salary ranges to trade away. Having the back up PG making $2 mill or $4 mill makes no difference other than DTS having to pony up a bit more in tax money. Ring chasers for the minimum, or the mini-MLE can always be added as long as there's a roster spot.

i read shumpert will be out for a bit with his injury, meaning deal is 100% dead.

Talks back up with Shump only out 7 days. Please be Dud and not Barnes included if it happens.

So glad this trade never panned out. Felton is a fattie and Shump is way too injury prone.

That could very well be the case, but earlier reports had the Thunder reluctant to pull the trigger on a trade from their side as well, which may or may not be posturing on their part. However, it could also be a ploy on New York's part by using Broussard as their mouthpiece to damage the Clippers' reputation with other clubs over their bitterness of Doc not taking back Raymond Felton's contract, which they've been pushing to anyone who will listen to no avail. Also, keep in mind, why wouldn't they have had an agreement in place with Oklahoma City just in case things fell through? The Thunder didn't make a deal either.

More than anything, I'm just glad this didn't happen because Collison and Barnes BOTH signed for less than they could have elsewhere. It would have sent a terrible message to players on our team and around the league if we traded them just months after they did that.

Saved From Doc's Dealings

Post#53 » by Ranma » Mon Feb 24, 2014 11:03 pm

I'm personally with Sterling and the internal staff on this one. Doc needs to be alleviated of some of his personnel management responsibilities with the proposed overpayment on his part. Udrih was just bought out and we were supposed to give up 2 second-round picks in order to dump his failure of a signing in Mullens?! Not to mention giving up Collison and Barnes to get a hobbled Shumpert and the bad contract of Felton. The Knicks even turned down the Thunder's offer of a first-round pick for Shumpert because they really wanted to unload Felton's contract.

Chris Broussard, ESPN (2/24/14)
The Knicks' priority all along in trading Shumpert was to attach Raymond Felton's contract to the deal and get a solid point guard in return. That nearly happened with the Clippers.

While Shumpert's injury did not deter the Thunder, it did kill the Knicks' hopes of sending him to Los Angeles. Clippers coach Doc Rivers really wanted Shumpert, sources say, and Rivers was willing to do a deal that would have sent Darren Collison, Matt Barnes, Byron Mullens and two second-round picks to New York for Shumpert, Felton and Beno Udrih. But Clippers owner Donald Sterling and others within the organization were hesitant to bet on Shumpert after seeing him go down in Wednesday's game at New Orleans, according to sources.

Why Iman Shumpert is still a Knick

Aww Ranma, please don't tell me you're taking Broussard's word as truth. He never breaks anything. He's the new Peter Vescey. My guess is that he was the one who first "confirmed" that the trade was essentially done, and since it didn't actually happen he's now trying to justify his original "report." Either that or the Knicks "sources" are trying to save face. Either way, I doubt anything Broussard says holds any merit.

And I am aware of the heavy use of quotation marks above - but they're necessary when discussing this joke of a reporter.

as likely as that scenario maybe, i will never take that bigot broussard's words seriously unless there are others with better journalistic reputations reporting the same.

I agree with everything you said, pistol, and I'm certain he's the Knicks' mouthpiece in this report but that doesn't necessarily mean what he reported is not true. Maybe the Knicks are exaggerating the deal from their perspective for whatever reason, but even if it was just the widely reported Shumpert-and-Felton proposal for Collison-and-Barnes, it would still be a bad deal IMO. It just takes it to an outrageous level if the scenario Broussard reported is true, so I guess the ESPN sensationalists win this one because it definitely got my blood boiling to read that.
