Especially with how well they'd been playing so far in the second half of the season. Looks like they were even using all of their best available players, including the Boateng-Neustadter double pivot that's been so instrumental in them finally looking like they have their **** together.

They better hope for Höwedes to return, though. CR7 will eat Hoogland alive.

Formerly dead last Eintracht Braunschweig is about to rejuvenate their chances to avoid relegation.

Up 1 in Nürnberg. Kumbela with the header and Nürnberg down to 10 men. Gotta win it.

Good for Kumbela, dude was a machine in BuLi2 and it was hard not to cheer for those Braunschweigers.

Anyway nice to see Slomka's having an impact on HSV and this Gladbach-Hoffenheim game has been interesting so far, ter Stegen has already made a bunch of great saves while the Gladbach attackers have already popped 2 past Casteels. Hrgota getting a second straight start and almost scored a real howler just before the 2-0.

2-1 Volland feeding Firmino.

lol if Hoppenheim can hold onto this 2-2 the whole team needs to chip in to throw Sule an amazing party, that kid's saved two open goals from going into the net. Should've been 3-0 or 4-1 right now if he wasn't in exactly the right place to cover for Casteels.

Casteels is so bad. I have no idea why he gets nominated for the Dutch NT.

Braunschweig blew it. Up one man für 45+min, missed two penalties and conceeded 10 seconds into the 2nd half. That's how you get relegated. Just stupid.

Slomka used the right tactic against Dortmund today.
Let them dominate possession and see whether the track & field athletes can pass their way through a semi-organised defense.

The duo of Sokratis and Friedrich was terrible today. I can understand that Friedrich is terrible since he was gone from the Bundesliga and considered done as a player. However, Sokratis has been piss poor today and in many other games this season, too.

? I've been very impressed with Sokratis most of this season. Didn't see the game today but so far he's been far better than I expected him to be or thought he was at Werder. Friedrich and Schmelzer though will sink any D. Wish Kloppo didn't love Schmelzer so much and would play Durm or Grosskreutz at LB instead.

He wasn't that bad when Hummels or Subotic were still around.

Playing with Friedrich, Bender or Sarr next to him you can see he has little plan of how to organize a defense, though.

Zenit will definitely take advantage of that in the CL. Hopefully, Hummels can return soon enough.

I don't blame him for that. He's not supposed to organize the defense and doesn't do it well. Luckily Hummels is supposed to be available on Tuesday.

Hulk and Danny taking turns going at Schmelzer is where Zenit will hurt BVB in this first leg, although I think like against Shaktar last year they'll establish their class in the second leg.

Still can't get over that FK for the third goal.. Straight for like 80% of the trajectory and then that massive swerve.

absolutely fantastic matchday in the bundesliga. great goals, great stories, great turn arounds.

as for hsv-bvb: it's no secret that i'm not the biggest dortmund fan. but this win is all about slomka and the resurgence of hamburg. seriously, who was the last quality manager they had before signing slomka? martin jol - who gave up after just one season? i actually can't remember. so many bad or mediocre managers... why oh why?

i can only repeat what i already wrote in this thread: hamburg have the potential to be a top 15 team in europe. not with this squad, not in this situation. obviously.
but given all the circumstances:
- one of the largest and richest metro areas in europe
- unlimited amounts of fans and potential partners/sponsors
- basically no competition in north germany (werder is a pretty local thing)
- youth scouting in northern germany, netherlands, whole scandinavia
they have all the tools to be a really big player in europe.

as for the last point: sure, we live in a globalized world. but look at bayern, they have several austrian talents playing for their u-17, u-19 or bayern II squads. alaba is worth about €30 million and they basically got him for free. that's how do you regional scouting! and i'm not even talking about bavarian talents. you have to take advantage of your location. look at the players rangnick brought over from scandinavia - to salzburg! hamburg executives probably didn't even know they exist.
Wake up, girl. I wanna go surfing.

Wolfsburg is winning, winning and winning. Wouldnt surprise me if they soon lock themselves up a CL spot with Leverkusen struggling.

No surprise really. The quality signings made in Gustavo and De Bruyne start to pay off now.

Not according to Massimo. He has opined that Calhanoglu is "average." You have to wait till he signs for Galatasaray. Then, he'll have superpowers.
