Every NBA team employs countless lawyers and capologists to work the areas everyone feels Chauncey would be weakest in.
How many NBA teams could employ a former player as popular as Billups?
I'm not saying Chauncey is the best candidate but to dismiss him because he's never done it before or its assumed he couldn't negotiate with MBA types is a bit silly: NBA teams are a business like any other with so many different departments...we really need someone that can bring all the heads of those departments together and come up with the best moves.
Personally I feel that until our organisation takes analytics seriously we're shooting ourselves in the foot. Whether you believe it's the new wave of doing things or you don't believe at all or you're somewhere in the middle the fact remains we've been slow to delve into analytics, which means we're not utilising a tool that a lot of our opposition use to great success.
After this long it's almost like we're burying our heads in the sand...and that's obviously not a wise move

Re: Chauncey as GM?
I simply don't know what Chauncey brings to the table as a GM.
Being a smart player or even a leader as a player doesn't mean you're going to be effective running the front office of a team. For every Jerry West there are a number of Michale Jordans and Magic Johnson's out there.
I agree he doesn't need to be a capologist or a stat-head to run the team, but he does need to understand that side of the business and I don't have any indication that he does.

For the record, Chauncey is no rookie when it comes to business either. He owns 30 Wendy's in St Louis.

Interesting point. I didn't know that.
Hmm... Then again, JoeD did wonders with his fieldhouse thing before becoming GM... Not the same thing but I think I'm a little gunshy right now

He's lost his fastball. Old Simmons would have understood the Cavs best (only?) chance to get Lebron to come back this summer would be a 6-7 game Cleveland-Miami series in which the Cavs young guys looked like they belong in the playoffs and Wade looked OLD. New Simmons just throws up some softball jokes about trying hard to make the 8 seed.
He worked hard and brought something different. It paid off. Now he's fat and happy and just another corporate shill for the 4 letter network.
Hes a Boston homer fan who's blog became big enough to make him valuable to ESPN. People who like him are so confusing to me.
He plays a major part in making that ABC studio show the **** storm that it is.

We need someone who is smart, with a logical philosophy. That's all i want. Whether he's a stat guy or an MBA or not, can be worked out in interviews. What makes Joe awful is a fundamental lack of smarts and an awful philosophy (positions and balance and bball IQ don't matter, we just need to stack talent that others don't believe in). I want a thinker.

If I may chime in I wouldn't hire Chauncey but it is not because of the lack of law degree. I just think it takes time and training to do a job. I will say that the GM with the most Championships since Auerbach is Jerry West with a West Virginia education.

So many uniformed, casual opinions, and thought pieces
Only talks about feelings and personalities.
Thinks every Larry Bird decision is great.
He is good at pop cultural twists which would be nice to do for a living but any serious commentary while he does wrote very well, but sometimes he'll have outdated public based assumptions

Re: Chauncey as GM?
Bill Simmons is still the same as before IMO but he has way more responsibilities now, he runs Grantland (which IMO consistently has some of the best sports content on the web) and was the guy who spearheaded 30 for 30...calling him a goofball because he doesn't know things like that the internet speculation is Gores spearheaded Cheeks being fired instead of Dumars is dumb. He's never been a guy who reports on facts alone or someone who doesn't make any mistakes, he just provides his opinions as a fellow fan who has way more exposure to players, coaches, GMs, owners, etc than the average fan would.
And BTW I think he is right...the GM position requires skills and experiences which the majority of players would not have unless they were willing to work at lower positions for years under someone who did. But as former players, many of them expect to step right in. I don't want Dumars as our GM anymore and I don't want an inexperienced Chauncey either.
