plus james franco is riff raff which is both funny and amazing.

wait who said spring breakers was better than lincoln?

from what ive heard that it seems polarizing, on one hand some critics praise it as a satirical expose of modern hedonistic youth culture and is meant to come off as tongue in cheek, while others claim that it is unnecessarily gratuitous and malevolently exploitative.

wait, just typing that out makes me want to watch it now

a very well respected french film magazine. they pretty much come out with a list every year of their best movies, and while i dont always agree, the ten movies they pick are always the best movies released that year imo.

anyways i think i love spring breakers. im not sure what to make of all of it yet, its such a surreal movie. i really hate to say this about movies but i feel like most people who disliked it just didnt get it or are looking at this movie for superficial entertainment. probably had to do with the marketing for it, but really that was intentional and plays even more into the themes of this film.

yeah but thats the whole point, our culture is unnecessarily gratuitous and exploitative. like literally the opening scene of this movie is closeup slow motion shots of titties, and its so desensitizing. it really is more than just a satire, its much more poetic than that imo. its a movie made for kids that grew up watching MTV spring break shows and the real world. oh yeah and the way it deals with race too, i still havent even figured out how to feel about it. i could ramble about it but i would ruin the movie.

i do feel like some of the points the movie tries to make are a bit too straightforward and obtuse. like yeah i get it, you dont have to keep ramming the point home to me. but i guess you could argue this film has no time for subtlety, and it would be a valid point considering the themes.

all that said, im not a big fan of blondes and ashley benson was like 10/10 in this movie. the threesome with her and vanessa hudgens is pretty hot.

oh yeah and theres pretty much a **** britney spears music video in this and i cant express how amazing it is in words. i **** love violent scenes with pop songs in the background.

I was under the impression that spring breakers was just another raunchy ass over the top movie. Leave it to doormat to make it appealing to me. I will watch it one of these days and make my own critique of it.

you have to understand that the guy who directed this made super art house films and this is really no different as far as style, he just had a big budget and A-list actors. if you understand that the acting is mediocre (apart from franco) and the dialogue is non existent then you will appreciate it a lot more. sometimes you have to look beyond the traditional aspects of a movie (such as acting/dialogue) to appreciate it.

movies are a visual medium (language of cinema is visual) and the best movies say a lot without characters delivering exposition in a rote manner

a lot of my favorite movies rely on visuals over acting/dialogue

yes 100% im convinced most people that didnt like this movie cant enjoy movies visually. they dont understand the difference between good/bad cinematography and they cant enjoy a movie without being told a story. they view movies more like entertainment than art. like i was reading reviews and people were saying stuff like the dialogue was ****, and completely missing the point of the film. the few words that they do say are actually pretty important. i could ramble about this movie visually for hours, especially the color palettes, its so striking.

well i dont think theres anything wrong with that, some people take art for its superficial value and i have absolutely no problem with that. just dont call it **** cuz you arent willing to look deeper or break your preconceived notions.
