His worst case is a guy who has been a ten year NBA player and one of the best three point shooters in NBA history?

Seems like he's just as likely to be the next Jimmer or Adam Morrison.

Tweener at 6-8 225 with supbar handles & elite shooting ability.

He plays the 4 right now, with very average athleticism & wingspan. So, he's destined to be a role player at either forward position in the NBA.

If you have him at the 4, he's obviously your stretch 4. But I'm not too sure how he'll defend any 4 worth anything offensively.

And if you have him at the 3, he does not handle the ball at an NBA level. So he's strictly a spot up guy, who again, will have trouble defending with his average athleticism & wingspan.

He'll bounce around the league until his rookie contract expires, then he'll be overseas unless he finds a team that can find a way to hide him defensively & he absolutely strokes it from downtown (45-50%) over his entire rookie deal.

Seriously, he's a better Szczerbiak IMO. He can't jump for **** but he doesn't look like he's running in bunny slippers like Adam Morrison, pretty mobile. He seriously has a Dirk Nowitzki like repertoire of shots, if he was only 7 feet tall and European.

The guy is a lot more athletic than some of you are making him out to be. He is obviously not high flyer but he can move his feet and his shooting ability will open up his driving game.

Yes...

Jimmer is too short and Morrison shooting is no where near McDermott/Korver level.

Doug has a good head on his shoulders and knows how to play the game ... I'm a believer

Brian Scalabrini type of player at the nba level most likely, which should be enough to land him fan favorite scrub status for many years if he works hard.

I can't believe some people say that he is a top 5 pick. He is not even top 15 pick man.

around 15-25 will be his spot. He has no tools to defend NBA forwards. And obviously can't play at 4. can't defend 3.

Yeah, he can shoot the ball well. However, many people don't think Parker at 1 or 2 because of his lack of athleticism and defense, so Parker probably won't be top pick in this draft, altough having a unique offensive game, So, in this context, McDermott has no chance to sneak into top 10.

He can be Korver type player, which is not bad.

I think he'll be an effective player.

He moves very well without the ball. This is huge as there's 5 guys and only 1 ball. A lot of college stars who disappoint in the NBA are used to having the ball in their hands a lot and can't adjust to be useful in secondary offensive roles. McDermott is going to help his team's offense even when he's only a 2nd or 3rd option mostly working off the ball.

Defensively, most NBA defensive value is executing team defense. There's no reason to believe that he can't or won't be able to effectively work in NBA team defensive schemes. Like most college stars, there's no proof that he can either so this will be a big factor in how effective he'll be - but again that's an uncertainty with most draft picks. 1 on 1 isolation offense (either from the perimeter or the post) is generally low efficiency, especially so when a 4th or 5th option sees a weak defender on them and tries to act like a star.

Overall he'll probably be a 4th to 7th best player on a good team (low-end starter or high-end reserve). As many reserve units are weak on offense he's a bit more likely to come off the bench (both to bolster his team's bench offense and to have easier defensive matchups).

My biggest question with him is what position is he going to play at the next level? He's too slow to play SF and not big enough to play PF.

This is what ultimately undermines a lot of college stars, including many of the ones people are bringing up in this thread.

He's trash. Poor defender and limited offensively. Good catch and shoot off player but can't shoot off the dribble and has garbage handles. Too slow to play the 3 and to small for the 4. Steve Novak with a decent inside game

If he goes to a team that runs a lot of motion sets, he'll fit in fairly well. If he goes to a team that runs a lot of isolation sets or 1-1, his value will be limited to being a dead eye shooter from the corners.

The defense thing is being overblown. Is he going to be a lockdown defender? Absolutely not but I think he can guard at a level that is he's not a liability on the floor to defend.
