A player like Hawes serves an important purpose beyond whether he helps this season. He lets you see how the offense would run with the presence of a stretch 4 or stretch 5 so that you know if that piece will fit later. One of the near term issues is determining if Kyrie is someone to lock up your cap for, if Dion is a piece of the puzzle, if Tristan is a piece of the puzzle, if Deng even fits.
If the team comes together and is solid down the stretch, even if they miss the playoffs, maybe you finally have something to build on. That is preferable to the last few seasons where the team has stumbled into the offseason.

I felt the same way about Bynum. Though he was not a great fit here by any means, Bynum was used to help show the young guys how to play through a big man.
Well at least we're not Detroit!
