Thing about going out on a limb. If the limb starts cracking, you have to consider the fall or start backing up a foot or two.
I'm fine with Shaw being coach if he's given the same roster punch that Karl had last season. If we're downgrading the overall talent of the team I seriously would have just rather, realistically, given Karl one more season to get it done. The trade that would have happened in the offseason would be purely to get a SG back into the lineup without losing any assets, and to ensure the 3 point shooting was shored up.
It was well worth one last additional season because the team was not that far off. We could see that with Gallo and a player of Iggy's caliber this was a very strong, well distributed team with a coach that was as seasoned as you get. It was petty to ignore Karl's improvements. While being a very important point, the 1st round exit could be directly pinned on not having a Gallo. 3 adjustments needed to be made to the team: replacement for Iggy, shore up the 3 point shooting, healthy Gallo.
Really, this could all be accomplished by acquiring back our very own Arron Afflalo and allowing Gallo to heal up while giving Wilson this entire season to grow. Tbph, that is a very small time to wait compared to the projected wait time now.
So we make a move for Shaw. We have a crappy trade executed that completely incinerates the size advantage we had, and injury creeps in. Our new coach eliminates our backup pg and both pgs go down. We haven't made any moves to fit Shaw's system nor have we kept the exact same team in place to see how Shaw could handle the exact same situation Karl had, thereby waiting until this year's draft to actually make the appropriate moves to get Shaw the exact right players for his system.
There was no need to make several changes to the team until one fairly critical change was assessed, and that was how Shaw handles a full season with a carefully crafted roster that proved themselves. We should have maintained a very strong trading position, evaluated Shaw, and head directly into this draft to make the roster moves correctly.
From that conservative standpoint, I think the trigger was pulled way too soon on too many things that were based on assumption and not enough patience with those that were based on established facts.
So what do we do now? -Take evaluating Shaw seriously. He may take it even more safe than Karl ever did. What I mean by that is what is Shaw willing to do that Karl wasn't?
Anyway, that's how I view the mess. I know there's a lot of hindsight is 20/20 in there, but I'm just a fan and I've been sensing this all along. There are GMs getting paid to sense the same things and for some reason they are not sensing them.
The ONLY move that I could applaud the FO for at this point is if they acquired Arron Afflalo for Andre Miller. Solves a lot of problems all at once, and I don't think Arron's too old. He's the perfect age for a 2-3 year build up. Billups was right when he recommended him initially.
Maybe sign Carter or Boykins as a temporary signing to get through the season, trade Miller for Afflalo, and I think we would all be much more at ease heading into this draft.
