Sounds like he is a young 3 and D guy in the mold of Sefelosha and that would be a nice addition to the time. He is young, has good size and somewhat athletic, hopefully he plays well with us and turns into a rotational player for the future. And if Riley feels we need a Caron Butler or Danny Granger or etc we can cut Tony Douglas.

I agree. The key is that he is perimeter defender who can guard the 1, 2 and 3 positions while being able to hit the open 3 shot on offense. I believe Riley knows - because of Allen's diminished defensive skills - that a perimeter defender is required. I still think that if Caron becomes available , we will go that route instead.

The more I think about it the more sense it makes to at least give Liggins a try.

Is he a better defender then Butler and Granger at this point in time? no doubt.

Is he a better rebounder then Butler and Granger at this point in time? no doubt.

Is he healthier then Butler and Granger at this point in time? no doubt.

Both Granger and Butler really struggled to shot the 3 and to score this year, so their only advantage over him is also questionable.

It really comes down to - can the kid step up his game on offense, mainly hit shots on a good %.

Are we really gonna use this guy though?

I see him as another Harris/varnado. He's just gonna ride the bench the rest of the season, maybe play on games where we blow the team out or we rest lebron/Battier/wade

Right but this kid has been playing under our umbrella this all year. His coach was Spo's assistant. He played in the Heat system, even if it was with Dleague players. It's not like we just picked him up off the streets. We've been following him all year.

Too late, Liggins has become part of the Heat family.

Don't mind the 10 day signing to see how he goes - Can't see him staying on though if Ennis is available next season.

If we wanted someone athletic shouldn't of we got Griffin back?

Griffin has no 3 point range, he's more of a undersized PF.

Do you think the players like Liggins more than they liked Mason?

Mase was a brother and someone everyone on the team genuinely liked. He didn't produce so he got traded. If Caron/Granger can shake free and we keep Liggins itll have nothing to do with being a part of the family, itll be because Riley think he will help the team more. Whether I agree with that or not doesn't matter, all I know is I trust Riley to make the best decision.

I think there is a great chance we get butler if he is bought out.

Either way this is a move for next year. If he sticks around then he's a bench replacement for that energy wing - hopefully in a Thabo mould/role. If he doesn't he'll be back for Summer League, and getting a camp invite. They can sign him to a couple 10-days, put a bit of extra cash in his pockets, then bring him into camp

FROM ASK IRA

Q: I realize that DeAndre Liggins' tenure on the Heat will probably be very, very short, but it seems like a strange pickup. His numbers in college and the NBDL are hardly overwhelming, and then there are the off-the-court issues. Why did the Heat even bother with this move? -- David.

A: This is more hunch than anything. But after purchasing operational control of the Sioux Falls Skyforce this season, the Heat did not send a single player on assignment and had not called up a player until Tuesday. With the buyout market moving rather methodically, from what's going to happen to Danny Granger to what's going to happen with Caron Butler, there basically was enough wiggle room to add someone on a 10-day contract. And it's not as if you have to keep a player for all 10 days. Liggins played well for Heat staffers Pat Delany and Octavio De La Grana, the Skyforce's coaches, and this sends a signal that if you send players to the Heat's D-League affiliate, there is a chance for time with the parent team, even if you are not working under contract to the Heat. Or perhaps Liggins showed enough with the Magic and Thunder that the Heat were waiting for the worst of Liggins' legal issues to subside, which happened about a week ago. It remains unlikely he even will be active Thursday against the Knicks.
