Re: Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing (Part 2)
Again, Hands, sorry to be a contrarian --- and I would literally dance around my house wearing boxer shorts on my head if I were to be proven wrong -- but Ted had owned two professional sports teams for the better part of 18 years cumulatively, has never had a team reach the conference finals, has never made the everyone-gets-in-NBA-playoffs, and has never once fired a GM.
We can dream though, eh?

Oh, Ernie Grunfeld, I hate your work so
You’ve made us just good enough not to blow.
You present yourself as incapable and lowly,
but you are Keyser Soze killing us all slowly.

Does anyone know when Ernie's contract officially ends? I don't want to renew my season tickets until I know whether or not he will be here anymore. The deadline for renewing my season tickets is March 28 and I am going to ask the Wizards for an extension until after I know whether Ernie is still the GM. I am just trying to figure out when that will be.

You should start a Don't Renew til Ernie's Through movement.

I think it's till the end of the season. I know his previous contract was. He re-upped on April 24th, 2012 before the previous contract expired.

Ha, I just might. I have been a season ticket holder for 18 years but renewing Ernie will be the final straw that broke the camel's back.

So, do you think its till the end of the regular season, or whenever the Wizards are eliminated out of the playoffs (assuming they make it)

Ted will announce Ernie's new contract during the playoffs. They will be all-smiles and back-slapping.

Wouldn't it be most likely to run the NBA year? Which would end at the end of June?

I don't think you want playoff elimination to undermine such an exciting announcement.
The way I expect it to go down is with a leak, just few days before the season ends (and with Washington clinching seed 3-5), followed by a confirmation by our owner in the press, and a in your face blog post about the value of staying the course and the success of their rebuild.

This. Anything else would surprise me.
My hope is Ernie Grunfeld gets "promoted" to a new position. It would allow him to cede GM duties to someone new, like Troy Weaver, while staying on in some different role.

Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

Isn't that what they did to Wes Unseld? Where is he nowadays?
Maybe Turd can make Ernie disappear as well.

Re: Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing (Part 2)
We are so screwed with Ernie "Checkers" Grunfeld
For example, the Cavaliers signed Lester Hudson to two 10-day contracts in 2012, and the guard performed spectacularly. He scored at least 23 points in three consecutive games, and hit two last-second shots. The Cavaliers wanted to sign him to a contract that included non-guaranteed money for the second year, however, and Hudson balked. He found a better deal with the Memphis Grizzlies, and promptly signed with them. General managers have gone from playing chess to checkers, as one NBA source explained, because they now have to think several steps ahead even with short-term, non-guaranteed deals. If a team signs a player whose rights they don't own, is there a possibility he plays so well that he prices himself out of its market? Cleveland Plain Dealer

IIRC it went something like this. Bob Ferry was GM with Shue then Loughery as HC. Bullet had been first round exists in the playoffs for 5 years straight and Abe finally agreed to a reboot and the hired Nash as GM in 1990 after 40-42 and 31-51 seasons with Wes at HC. Wes had already become the head coach in the 87/88 season after a (8-19) start by Loughery. Wes was Abes guy so he was called to the rescue. An amazing move Abe would replay again. Hiring a GM with an existing crappy HC in place that was an Abe favorite hand picked person.
Nash would go on to rebuild the team with the pecking order of Owner/HC (Wes) then GM Nash. The same thing Abe did with Owner/HC EFJ/ EG later.
Nash was finally able to get Wes out from HC in 93/94 after Wes went 24-58. Much like EG was finally able to do getting ride of EFJ. Nash replaced Wes with a legit HC in Jimmy Lynam who came from the 6ers. Its now 1995 and the team is retooled and wins .476. And if not for massive injuries would have been a lot better and in the playoffs.
So Abe fires Nash over the J Howard dissing thing in 96. Howard felt dissed by Nash because he didn't bend over to his rookie contract demands. Which he shouldn't have. Abe then grabs control back now that things are looking better and puts his old hacks back in place.. Wes Unseld as GM and B. Bickerstaff as the HC
The first year in 97/98 they go 42-40. Then their incompetence kicks in. They go 18-32 and there is an NBA strike.
In just a few short years we went from this..http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/WSB/1996.html
to this. http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/WAS/1999.html
to this http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/WAS/2000.html
and end with coaching geniuses like G. Heard (14-30), D. Walker (15-23) No one wanted to coach in this organization with Abe as owner and Wes as GM.
Then MJ came in as an Abe partner to save the franchise and cleaned up the crappy contract mess. MJ was looking to get into NBA ownership and this was his chance. So he start in the front office and cleans up the mess.
J Howard. 15M
M Richmond 10M
R Strickland 10M
Isaac Austin 5M
And this is what they were getting in 2000
MJ then took the court. Line Abes pockets. Then when MJ was ready to return to the front office in 2003 Abe gave him the boot. Goes back on his partnership agreement and give MJ like 10M for his efforts. Then hand picked his HC..EFJ.. then hired a GM.
Abe and Wes. If you want to know why the Bullet/Wizards had been a dysfunctional franchise for so long, look no further. But it all started with Abe.

Yeah, that's been my prediction. If Ted likes EG that much, he will just promote him up and make room for a new GM instead of dumping him. That's if EG isn't interested in being a GM anymore. It could be a smooth way for EG to clean up his resume. If they get a great GM and great coach, he would be associated with the new success and a successful rebuild after Ted took over as owner. In time people would only remember the winning and the Wall and Beal picks. They will talk about the genius of him getting out of the Gil contract that was done by Abe. Under that mountain of successes and winning, Ves will only be a side note.
If this is the path, they will want to decide on Otto by the trade deadline next year. If he isn't going to make it, trade him. Gotta clean that up if needed before it starts to stink. He can get away with Ves on that resume, but not Ves and Otto.

Your history is far too kind to John Nash and Jim Lyman. John Nash was an awful GM, and Jim Lyman was an awful coach.
You are also too critical of Wes as a coach. Despite having almost no talent, he had teams that constantly competed. Charles Jones was THE ONLY AVAILABE CENTER for the Bullets for a large part of Wes' coaching career.
Viva le tank! At this pace, it will never end.

EG should be fired for simply blowing THREE top 6 picks (Miller/Foye trade, Ves, and Porter)

I would add the tail end of the Bob Ferry era to that. Pollin/Ferry/Unseld were a pretty top notch trio in the 70s, but through much of the 80s, Ferry was missing a lot of talent in the draft and stuck in a "trading young assets for veteran leadership" type cycle of mediocrity. Drafting Jeff Malone and signing Bernard King were good moves, but 1sts of Kenny Green, John Williams, Mugsy Bogues (over "hand down, man down"), Harvey Grant, and Tom Hammonds in successive drafts sure had the team going nowhere.

Grunfail is going to get extended, and so is Whitman. Might as well accept it now.
