Re: Official "Raisins" Randy (Wittless) Wittman Thread
I like Wittman. He comes across like a real mensch, and I dig his old school no nonsense demeanor, but when I look around the league and see what some coaches in the East are doing with a lot less than the Wizards, I just don't see how he's earned an extension.
All those home losses against some of the bottom feeders of the East don't sit very well with me when you look around and see teams like Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Toronto and Charlotte are doing much more with less.

Amazing. Granted, they had a bad night but you wanted see what a great coach can do. Look at this roster. Parker was out this game.
http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400489695
That a 40-16 team in the West anchored by a 37 year old TD, Parker and coached by the great Pops.
And you know one of the things I really like about Pops. Just like Tibbs, he sets a high standard. If you aren't playing up to it, even the starters, he shuts them down and makes them own it. And in doing so, he develops his other players for another day.
If you are on the roster, you already passed test enough that he expects you to be able to play so he plays you. If you can't, they move that player and try the next one. Rince... repeat..
And most the team is mid to late firsts and 2nd round picks.

Re: Official "Raisins" Randy (Wittless) Wittman Thread
Great 3x OT win in TOR. Lets start with that...
But lets not let that overshadow that Randy is still a bad head coach.
What the hell was he thinking not calling a time out as a 14 pt lead slipped away ?
And when Wall was gassed and turning the ball over, he could find a few minutes to get Miller back out there ?
Now I do give him some credit for putting Temple in on a defensive stop and it worked. I believe he was the once defending Lowry who was falling to the ground when Wall made that easy get out of here block to end one of the OTs.
But the big one was sitting on his hands while that lead evaporated. Wiz had this one in hand after half time. I just don't understand what the hell he is doing. If you are up 14 and the momentum is shifting because the other team is making momentum changing plays and you lose 6 pts from the 14 pts....
CALL A TIME OUT.

What is your ranking of the coaches in the Eastern conference?

You could do it just for this year if you would like... probably good since there are so many new coaches.

Good little article outlining the long 2 issue with Randy.
And thats way Randy is a idiot.
And come on. Beal is the worst offender of the long 2. How it is that when TA get closed out on for a 3 ball, he pumps, then get himself back behind the 3 line to shoot but Beal willingly steps one foot inside the 3 line and lets it fly, like he just achieved something. And Randy says nothing because, hey, its an open look.
A good coach would have turned Wall lose last game. They weren't going to pass to get open looks against the long excellent D of MEM. Beal scored when he drove. Wall scored when he drove. Even Trevor A drove baseline for a dunk. Wittless is just Wittless when it comes to adjusting. Dude probably does his wife to a metronome.
And Randy was all focused about PACE before the game. Then he sat by and watched Wall walking the ball up court. Meanwhile I actually saw MEM running fast breaks.
I think Randy has been good for the team to get them where they are. He helped Wall. But he isn't going to game coach them to where they need to go.
And just when it looked like just one more lose on that losing streak could of done it. Now we just have to struggle though this until the season is over. They aren't going to cut him loose this late in the year.

That interview with Kyle Weldie was pretty shocking. Couldn't believe the coach of a professional basketball team in 2014 would utter such nonsense.

Re: Official "Raisins" Randy (Wittless) Wittman Thread
So here's Witt addressing good shots and Popovich addressing good shots. Which answer do you think is better?
http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnatio ... ense-a-qa/
Witt is a joke of a coach. What really bothers me is how incredibly closed minded he is. The man has THE WORST WINNING PERCENTAGE IN NBA HISTORY of any coach who's coached over 400 games. It seems like it would behoove him to look at every possible resource to get better. The whole 'stick your head in the sand' attitude towards analytics is completely unacceptable in my eyes.
Q. Can you explain the concept of “good-to-great?”
Popovich: “There are a lot of good shots, but if you can turn that into a great shot, percentages go through the roof. Contested shots are really bad shots. People’s percentage goes down almost by 20, almost without exception. All those things in an offense are things a coach is always trying to develop. It takes time to get everybody to the point where they all buy in and understand how it’s good for the group to do things.
“You want to penetrate not just for you, but for a teammate. Penetrating because I want to make things happen. It could be for me. It could be for a teammate. It could be for the pass after the pass I make. As people start to realize that, then you get a flow and people start playing basketball rather than just running the play that’s called or making up their minds ahead of time.”
http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnatio ... ense-a-qa/
"So you’re saying that a 15-foot open look is not good? "You take open shots. You take open shots. Where they are is dictated by what the defense does. If you predicate what kind of shot you’re going to take not based on what you’re doing reading the defense, you’re not going to get good shots. I just worry about goods shots. You know what? Those numbers you can stick… alright? You know, all you analytical people that take that… You take good shots, that’s the most important thing. Maybe we’re not taking good midrange shots, maybe we’re taking contested ones. I understand the numbers are there for a reason, we look at the numbers, but to sit there and… We got a good, open shot we’re taking, I don’t care where it is."
A great question posed by Kyle Weidie. Not sure what I think of this answer.

Re: Official "Raisins" Randy (Wittless) Wittman Thread
Wall's been going to the hole much more since the allstar break. I wonder if conversations with other players or seeing Vogel coach got him rethinking Wittman's approach. He was quoted during the break saying that he needed to take less long 2s. If true, it'd suck that our best player had to get that simple advice from outside the organization.
Making extreme statements like "only" sounds like there are "no" Jokics in this draft? Jokic is an engine that was drafted in the 2nd round. Always a chance to see diamond dropped by sloppy burgular after a theft.

And you see good teams that realize what Pops preaches.
Its like a machines.
Catch ball and consider clock. If its early in the clock, like clock they pump fake, then advanced toward to the basket. If its open, they finish, but it usually isn't, so they pass. The advance might only be one or two dribbles. That's fine. How do you eat an Elephant. One bit at a time. They chip away at you and keep you on your heels. Always attacking.
Next up, rinse, repeat.

That's what is going to take. Wall is bigger than Randy. Randy will be long gone and Wall will still be here.
I was hoping during that last losing streak that it was a revolt. I never like to see players give up on a coach but at some point, short term pain is worth the gain. Players have to be talking behind closed doors. Specially once you have vets that know better.
Now it looks like they are going to finish off best they can with Randy there which is unfortunate. Not liking their playoff chances as much with Randy coach the game. Just hope Wall makes his feelings know in a professional way to his owner. Its a really tough position to put him in and you hope he doesn't have to be put in it. Ownership is supposed to be able to figure this out on their own. Ted has to have his own independent connections outside EG so he can get objective information.
How else do you decide on things like a new GM ?
Its Ted's team. Its up to him to figure this stuff out.

Am I the only one a little annoyed with this thread title? "Raisins"?? Come on! Is that even relevant? Is that his nickname from back in the day? Is it supposed to be funny? An insult? A reference to an inside joke? Please don't tell me it's insinuating Randy has a 'raisin' sized brain, if it is then LOL!
