Congrats to Coach Kevin McHale! He was awarded Coach of the Month for the Western Conference after the Rockets posted an 8-2 record in February.

"The Rockets and McHale, 53, quickly agreed Friday to a four-year contract, the final season at the team’s option."
Houston Chronicle | May 27, 2011

Just wondering if the Rockets lose in the first round does McHale get his option year declined? It would be like JVG and Adelman where they weren't technically fired, just not given a new contract.

Remember George Karl was Coach of the year last year and was fired for not getting out of the first round.

I think if the Rockets finish in the top 4 seeds and lose a series where they have home court advantage that McHale will not be the coach next year.

He's just not that good a coach. Whether it is drawing up plays out of time-outs, rotations, or using the team's depth and developing talent, he's just not that good. He has huge talent on this team and the team, at least the starters, are jelling. Give him the Chicago Bulls and he wouldn't be able to do half the good things with that team that Thibs has done.

Exactly! Talent makes all the difference. If McHale was coaching the Suns you think they could be in the playoffs race now? I don't think so.

Yes, Popovich could've coached the Suns into playoffs. Popovich is one of the best coaches in the NBA, might be even the best right now. I seriously doubt McHale could coach the Suns into a playoff team with the players they have. Popovich knows how to use his players, McHale not so much.

And right now I'd take Hornacek over McHale.

Pop has had at least 2 hall of famers on his squad every season he's coached the Spurs. Who knows how he would fare with lesser talent.

it's all about hype
too early to tell for hornacek (phoenix may miss the playoff just like houston during mchale first season here)
mchale overall has a winning record as a coach
only losing season he had is back in 08-09 minnesota team when love is a rookie
you can say anything you want about pops because he never really coach a team without an all-star (duncan)
you may not count pops first season because obviously they were tanking for #1 pick

The star players might be a product of Popovich coaching. Popovich knows how to bring the best out of players. McHale doesn't know how to do that. Look at Dragic and Lowry, they've become star players now because they are being used in the right way.

duncan has all-star written all over him when he was still freshmen in college
yes he was that good

dragic and lowry are not star
they still haven't make it to the all-star team yet
they are good player just like when they were playing for mchale
remember all the hype about lowry making the all-star team in the beginning of 10-11 season?
http://espn.go.com/nba/player/splits/_/ ... kyle-lowry
13.9 ppg, 6.8 apg, 4.1 rpg

dragic stats as a starter playing under mchale
http://espn.go.com/nba/player/splits/_/ ... ran-dragic
18.0 ppg, 8.4 apg, 3.5 rpg

haren went from 6th man to all-star
why don't you give mchale any credit?

you say lowry and dragic are stars
then you should consider parsons as star as well

McHale is not a good coach. If you could not tell that, then I have nothing else to say. Did we forget how he was unable to draw plays to win close games? The team is doing well because of all the talents. If Rox does not advance beyond the second round, we will certainly know why.
