Johnson's the risk/reward one, Santana should be comfortably mediocre in the AL East. Normally I'd go for the upside, but Johnson is just so damned prone to injury.
This also makes for an intriguing update of our past fun with arbitration. We'd surrender our 2nd rounder, but if Santana has a good season we'd likely QO him and receive back a comp round pick, upgrading the draft slot modestly.
Agreed. If you want some upside without the guarantee of innings, go with Johnson. If you want 180-200 IP with mediocre/average performance, then Santana is the safer bet. I would have been fine with JJ on a one year deal (though I can understand why the Jays were gunshy given all the other injury risks on the team), and I'll be fine with Santana on one as well. There is really no downside on a one year deal.

I still get the feeling we won't get this done.

Probably Santana even though I don't like him as a pitcher at all and think he's a terrible fit in the dome. At least the guy stays on the field, though.

What about the reports about Santana's alleged medical issues? Maybe AA/Beeston/Rogers/whoever actually runs this team is thinking if they passed on JJ because of his issues, then what's the point of throwing the same kind of money at Santana?
Just trying to get ahead of the talking points when we don't sign Santana.

That is depressing and so true at the same time.

Or...or!
They'll let us think we won't sign Santana and then they eventually will and we'll be so ecstatic that they actually signed a major league pitcher that we'll forget what a horrendous offseason this was. That should buy them an extra two months of goodwill.

I'd prefer to keep Stew and give Monte Morris
I'd really prefer to keep Morris and Stew and give the great Killian Hayes and 2nd round picks

Re: Ervin Santana now a Bargain
I like it at one year, largely because I do not think Santana will do well enough in the AL East that we'll really want him long-term. He shouldn't be terrible, but he is going to ship homers a-plenty; contrasting styles with Buehrle, but I'd expect fairly similar results.
Still, he definitely plugs a hole, and it's a move with some upside given the possibility of QOing him...or trading him as a rental if the season goes down the drain.
Edit: we don't have him yet, heh. Guess he's waiting a couple hours to see whether a better deal comes in, but I'd be surprised if one did.

I wouldn't, because at this point being outbid for Santana on a one-year deal would be the cherry on top of this miserable off-season

kind of hoping everybody screws him now, as much as I'd like 200 innings @ sub 4 era
