Syndergaard was not a toss-in. He was likely just as important in the deal as TDA was. The year prior, the A's allegedly wanted Syndergaard for Gio Gonzalez so it's not like he was an unknown prospect. The Jays and the league knew how much value he held, but clearly AA felt that making the deal for Dickey was worth the risk.

A few of the pitchers traded to the Marlins will look better than they are due to their home ballpark (Alvarez and likely Nicolino in particular), but I still think Syndergaard is the only prospect worth being upset over as far as players traded last winter (remains to be seen whether the Jays sold high on TDA or whether he will be able to stay healthy going forward). Unfortunately, the players the Jays got back were either complete busts (Johnson), injured (Reyes and to a lesser extent Dickey), or not very good to begin with (Bonifacio). Obviously Buehrle is the only one who performed as advertised.

I meant more in the context of the chronology of events. The deal was rumoured for weeks, and it was unclear from reports whether it would be d'Arnaud straight up or an Arencibia + Gose package. Then a day or two before it actually went down we found out it that not only would it be d'Arnaud, but Syndergaard would be added to the deal. So the deal went from bad to worse. You just don't give up two high-upside prospects for an aging knuckle baller.

Sandy Alderson got Zack Wheeler for two months of Carlos Beltran. He wasn't going to take Anthony Gose and JP Arencibia for the reigning Cy Young winner making $5M in 2013. I'd imagine the early talks of Gose and JPA was more wishful thinking, and not any type of legitimate rumor. I'm guessing it was always TDA/Syndergaard; it was just a matter of whether AA would pull the trigger on it.

Injury prone catchers generally get moved to 1B at some point and while D'Arnaud hits well for a catching prospect he doesn't light it up enough to register as a 25 year old 1B prospect.

Then a day or two before it actually went down we found out it that not only would it be d'Arnaud, but Syndergaard would be added to the deal. So the deal went from bad to worse. You just don't give up two high-upside prospects for an aging knuckle baller.

The deal was never going to be Gose and Arencibia.

The majority of this board was happy just seeing Arencibia non-tendered and Gose, a year later, still looks so lost at the plate that he looks less advanced than Kenny Wilson, a guy who not only has more than 500 less at bats at the professional level, has yet to play a single game at the AAA level and whose ceiling is probably that of a fourth outfielder at best.

Why would the Mets take that for a guy coming off the Cy Young award, regardless if he's an aging knuckle baller.

In isolation, I would never have wanted to see the team make that deal.

However, as a follow up to the Marlins deal, I could see why Anthopoulos made it.

It's not good value, but it was supposed to be the move that really pushed this team to the upper echelon last season.

the absolute worst case scenario occurred instead and now it only makes it look worse.

But it was at least defensible at the time if the goal was to put this team in the best possible position to go deep into the post season as soon as last year.

d'Arnaud still looks more like a victim of terrible luck as opposed to injury prone.

That' the extent of his injuries the past two seasons and it looks like some terribly bad luck as opposed to a worrisome trend.

But you're right that if he had to move to first, he'd lose significant value.

Syndergaard from all accounts has primarily been doing this mostly on his awesome fastball. From what I've read his offspeed pitches still needs work.

In general, we had the prospects, but have yet to properly develop them. If Syndergaard becomes something special, a huge reason will be the Mets developing his offspeed stuff.

He also had bulging discs in his back in 2010 which forced him to miss time. Back, knee, foot....none of those look "good" for a catcher. I think he was averaging ~84 games played over the last three seasons.

What a BS statement. The Jays did a phenomenal job developing Syndergaard. To pretend that he turned into a top prospect under our watch because we simply told him to go out and throw fastballs is beyond insulting.

It emphasized how Norris was told right from his pro debut, how results don't matter and they were focused on seeing him doing the right things (delivery, stride, refining all pitches).

He attributes this approach to his success in the 2nd half.
