Who Would Roy Pick as a Mentor? Brook Lopez of Course

Indiana Pacers forward Paul George recently told a website that he would like to "pick (the) brain" of LeBron James.

In a league where opposing players fraternize and work out together, Roy Hibbert does not often spend time with rivals. However if he had to pick a mentor for his game, Hibbert would seek out fellow All-Star big men.

"Probably Brook (Lopez)," Hibbert said. "He can find ways to score but (for) defending, Tim (Duncan).

Though Lopez has not played with the Brooklyn Nets since December, out with a season-ending broken foot injury, he has established himself as one of the best centers in the league. Lopez has averaged 18 points in his career. Against Hibbert and the Pacers, Lopez has scored just as well, averaging 20 points over the past four regular-season meetings. Pacers assistant coach Popeye Jones worked in Brooklyn last season and has instructed Hibbert on some knowledge about Lopez.

"Brook can score inside and out," Hibbert said. "(So) whatever I can take from Popeye about Brook, I'll take into my game."

Solidifies his position as one of my favorite players on one of my favorite EC teams.

Brook was having such a great season before the injury. I don't know how exactly he'd fit into this new small-ball, defensive Nets team, but it'd be interesting to see what they'd have figured out.

There was a thread on another sub-forum or forum altogether about combining two players to make a ridiculously good one, I think this combo was mentioned.

Brook is really one of the best offensive centers in the game now, the only person I think could match him offensively was Lakers era Andrew Bynum pre-surgery. Roy would be wise to choose him for an offensive mentor.

Thanks for posting, missed that part of the article. I'm not a huge Lopez fan personally, but it sucks he went down. He was having a great season and watching him and Roy go at it has always been fun. As long as the Nets were in the playoffs he likely would have been 2nd team All NBA.

Thanks for posting it, TJ. Brook is a great offensive player and since Popeye has coached him it makes a lot of sense to pick his brains about him. Duncan is an obvious choice as well. Good interview.

What I like about Roy is how sincere he is, this sort of statement adds to that view. This is a guy who might be paid big-time, but also knows he has to keep working to stay on top of the game, someone who knows that he isn't the best player in the world (unlike 80% of NBA players who think they are).
