Let me tell you the absolute most horrific thing is that the Pistons make the playoffs THIS year.

I'm rooting for them to lose every single game. They are 3 out.

Andre Drummond? There is no way in hell that the pick next year will be top 8. Right now its 9.

I'd 1000x rather have top-1 protection on next year's pick than pick 15 with the Pistons pick this year. There is no comparison. I want them to lose every single game.

Pistons pick will be top 10 this year in a much stronger draft than last year.

I would MUCH rather get the 9th or 10th pick this year than wait for Detroit's management to pull their heads from its collective ass and do just ONE of these things:

hire a real coach OR
trade Jennings OR
trade Smith OR
trade Monroe OR
get a real floor spacer OR
not whiff on another top 8 pick OR
continue to let Drummond improve substantially.

If just one of those seven things happens, their pick will be higher next year. The only way it gets worse is if they decline in every way possible. They really can't go much further south. We need that pick this year.

I think several of the teams below the Pistons can improve more than the Pistons can improve except for the Lakers, Bucks, Magic and Sixers. I feel the Celtics, Kings, Jazz, Cavs can all leapfrog them. Meanwhile, I don't see other teams ahead of them dropping below either, except for maybe the Hawks but they get back Horford. In order for the Pistons to make the playoffs next year they have a ton of work to do and other teams aren't just going to lay down. The Pistons will not be able to get much for their top asset (Monroe) because he'll be a rental. It's going to be the same squad plus someone they have to develop for a few years. I'm seeing a different direction than some of you.

NBA lottery machine on ESPN has the Pistons targeting Marcus Smart then Tyler Ennis. It's more likely Tyler Ennis and I don't think he's ready to change the direction of a team in one season. Lillard needed more than one year. So the Pistons are the same team. The question is can they trade Monroe for a shooter and I think we'll see soon that Monroe is a rental which limits his value and drastically reduces the chances of spinning him for a piece that can make an immediate impact and reverse the teams' fortunes literally overnight. I think it can be a top-5 pick in 2015.

Blazers pick

2 losses from 23
3 losses from 22
4 losses from 21
5 losses from 15

I think it's time to start thinking about BPA at 21. The Suns are all over Zach LaVine supposedly so I'd rule him out. But James Young?

My post on the Pistons board (they have a thread about tanking to keep their pick)

Bobcats fan here. I want your pick to lose protection and carry over to 2015 as a top-1 protected pick as I don't envision a draftee necessarily. Instead I look at the pick as more of an asset in general. I am greatly outnumbered on my board due to fans' perception of Drummond combined with some scarring from the Blazers tanking last year to keep their pick (they selected McCollum) and becoming a powerhouse team literally overnight.

I don't see any immediate help on your horizon.

The top-5 of this years draft may provide instant impact. Beyond that, these rookies need at least more than one year to develop and potentially help you improve. But will it be more than your competition? The teams ahead of the Pistons can stay ahead next year because they will be drafting comparable players in the 8-15 range. Not much separates those players in terms of talent. So while the Pistons could really stand to improve by developing a player like Tyler Ennis the next 2 or 3 years, other teams can also improve by drafting players like Gary Harris, Marcus Smart, Doug McDermott etc.

I look at other teams and see clearer paths to improvement. The Hawks get back Horford and they're the nearest playoff spot. The Bobcats could have nearly 20 M in cap space, a Blazers 1st anywhere from 21-24 and let's assume a significant trade asset in a top-1 protected Pistons pick. Kemba is also improving and Clifford has the allegiance of the team and players collectively buying into the team concept. The Nets have all kinds of money and talent (granted, old). The Knicks are due for a correction and being in a big market kind of puts pressure on them to make the right moves (thus the hiring of Phil Jackson). The Cavs have loads of talent and will draft near the Pistons (or win the 1st overall pick again).

So who are the Pistons most likely to catch above them? I don't see it.

I consider Jennings and J. Smith unmovable and I consider Monroe's value limited if he signs and offer sheet and becomes a rental.

Tank at will.

Furthermore, I don't like Gary Harris and consider Vonleh to overlap with Zeller. Gaining the pick next year with top-1 protection I feel improves its value and forces us to address SG with a legitimate fix, not a draftee.

We need to put on the full court press for Lance Stephenson. Keep in mind, we are one of the teams the Pistons will be gunning for to reach the playoffs. The Hawks are the only team I can see falling but as mentioned above, the Knicks and Cavs have just as much of a chance at improvement as the Pistons, if not a better one.

Well in reality they could get a few unlucky injurys next year and maybe make a bad trade or something just be completely awful. But still, I agree with you, I would rather have the pick this year.

Cho just needs to express a bullish attitude towards the Pistons pick. Look, the Bulls GM in refusing to trade our pick leading up to now (it has lost significant value) was posturing and standing his ground on the potential upside of the pick. Cho is not going to go out there and shop the Pistons pick for its downside like fans are doing here. He will have a high asking price and seek out GM's who are down on the Pistons. You really think one of those will be difficult to find?

It's adorable how Pistons' fans expect play offs next year again. It is obvious they should want to keep their pick and I bet they will. if for nothing else, they will have a chance to improve that pick in lottery. And then year after we will have the same kind of a chance with their pick in 2015 draft. Bit of a win- win scenario. I am inclined to bet against Pistons FO till shown sign not to. I am ok with us picking the POR pick guy, the second round one, being players on FA market again and then after we would see how we did, picking a help, rotation/role player with DET picks after next season to lock him up on rookie deal for 4 years. And with some sheer luck we may be picking 2nd or 3rd and get a great player. As long as it is not Okafor-one-man draft, there would be a prize to hope for in lottery, if we miss on that guys like Winslow would come handy.

next three games: @Pelicans, vs. Warriors, vs. Bucks. They'll probably miss him vs. Warriors, but the Pelicans and bucks should be easy wins with or without him.

The Blazers pick at 21 would be a huge relief considering their fast start.

I think pick 21 in 2014 is more valuable than pick 13 in 2013. We're going to get a decent player maybe even James Young.

I'd go for PJ if available

I definitely like Harrell, and would be absolutely shocked if he fell out of the top 20. I hope we try to move up and get him with the Portland pick and another asset or two.

Put me at 60%. There's a clear bottom 8 and Detroit is #9
