Rockets key to our offseason? (wiretap scenario)

Post#1 » by Piston Pete » Fri Mar 14, 2014 11:40 am

Per the wiretap, the Rockets will pursue Melo this offseason.....in which they will likely offer up Parsons+ in a sign and trade deal.

This would be our perfect time to swoop in and offer them Jennings/Smith for Amare/Parsons.

They become:

Jennings
Hardaway Jr / JR Smith
Shumpert
Smith
Chandler

We become:

???
KCP
Parsons
Monroe
Drummond

ps - we'd have cap space to play with to add a new starting PG with...

As good as that sounds, I don't think the Knicks or any team would take jennings and smith over parsons.

Parsons seems the perfect complimentary piece around Harden and Dwight.

If the Rockets were looking to sign and trade him wouldn't Smith be an option considering his BFF relationship with Howard?

I don't think Morey would look at Melo and say "we have to add him to Dwight and Harden to win a title", if anything doesn't Melo represent everything Morey and his crew have avoided thus far?

Ok, this is getting complicated, but...

Houston signs or signs/trades to get Melo to play SF
Detroit trades Smith to Houston for Asik, with Smith playing PF

Maybe Lin and Parsons go to New York

We obviously need to flip Asik to a third team, hopefully bringing back a SF.

Actually, I'd like us to do this regardless of the Melo-New York part of this.

The Smith/Melo pairing doesn't really work that well, because Melo has been playing his best basketball on both ends of the floor as a PF. I think he's playing most of his minutes at PF in fact. I'm sure that Morey is aware of that fact.

Monroe and Jennings to NY, Anthony to Houston, Parsons and Lin to Auburn Hills. Now that I think about it, pretty sure Parsons and Monroe can't be traded with other players after signing new deals but whatever.

I gotta imagine HOU's plan is to keep Parsons and play Melo at PF (Beverly / Harden / Parsons / Melo / Dwight is one heck of a lineup), which means they'll be dangling Lin, Asik, Jones, Motie, picks, etc. to NY in the sign & trade. I also imagine NY will try to insist on Parsons going back to them in any deal. As much as I'd love to somehow make it happen, I cannot fathom us (or any team) being able to wiggle our way into the deal and steal the best asset involved not named Melo.

To clear up the Monroe can't be traded thing:

IF he signs an offer sheet that we match we can trade him December 13th or thereabouts to any team in the league...except the team that signed him to the offer sheet. We can't trade him to that team for 12 months.

IF Monroe doesn't sign an offer sheet with anyone and re-signs with us he can be traded December 13th or thereabouts to any team in the league

I was talking about a sign and trade but unless they changed the rules recently other players can't be traded with him. We could still trade what would basically be his bird rights before free agency starts correct?

I think you cant just trade guys with a guy that you recently traded for. For Instance the Cavs couldn't trade anyone with Deng at the last trade deadline.

New York is not trading Amare's big expiring plus an asset for Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings. If Melo walks they are likely stripping it to the bolts, tanking '14-'15 and setting themselves up for a run at Love & Durant.

Question, When can Monroe be traded if he takes his Qualifying Offer?

If he takes the qualifying offer he will be worth next to nothing in a trade because he wouldn't be restricted next summer.

Wouldn't the team he gets traded to hold his bird rights? They could offer Monroe more money then anyone else.

I'm not sure if they could offer him more than everybody else or not but just the fact that he wouldn't be restricted would scare most teams off. Personally I don't feel Monroe is the type of player a team would take such a risk on unless your talking about us only getting back 2 solid rotation players or something along those lines.
