Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

One of my pet peeves with the Wizards under Wittman is their inconsistency in defending the pick and roll.

It seems like their MO is to go over the pick.

When it comes to defending the pick and roll this has to be without a doubt the worst out of the three options. It leaves a wide open lane for the ball handler, with the on ball defender in the trail position, and puts ridiculous amount of stress on the off man having to defend both the lane and the player that was setting the pick.

I don't know if it's a lack of recognition, or poor communication, but this happens far too often with the Wizards. When they ICE the pick and roll good things typically happen, they just don't seem to have a structured approach to defending those plays.

ICE may not be perfect way to defend the pick and roll, but for a defense the options coming off a pick and roll are far more predictable and they keep offenses where statistically they can do the least amount of damage, on the perimeter and on the base line.

Thanks and ICE is a way to defend the pick and roll where you deny the ball handler to use the screen. Youtube it there is a good video by bballbreakdown which explains it.

I think his best point was contrasting the inconsisentency with which the Wiz run their schemes with the Bulls and Pacers. Kind of undermines I believe it was PIF's contention that coaches don't matter much in the NBA.

On the contrary, other than perhaps NFL coaches and coordinators, I think NBA coaches impact the game as much or more than any other. There are so many sets in any NBA game, and so many late game, invent a play type opportunities.

... And there is very little time to implement schemes -- few in season practices, pretty short preseason, players in and out of lineups, 10 day contracts - the best coaches have rock solid schemes that they can plug players into. They teach on the fly and have to continually motivate pro athletes during the grind of an 82 game season (62 +\- for Nene).

OK, I will respectfully take the "kind of" devils advocate approach to this question. I think you pointed out that there isn't much time to implement new schemes during the regular season. And it is really difficult for new coaches with new players to implement there schemes.

So, one of the most important parts of coaching is continuity. Refining and having your players run your schemes well. The downside is that you are continually running the same schemes. You hear players say that there are no secrets in the L.

My contention is that the better teams with more talent are better able to run their coach's schemes the best.

Not saying that coaches don't matter - just saying that talent trumps coaching.
