A few quotes from Fat's article
Q: You mentioned the right amount of work. How do you establish that? What is the right amount of work?

A: For every roster it would be different. With an older team, it's going to be different than with a younger team. But you have to establish a work expectation in practice, a work expectation in shootaround and an overall expectation that whatever we're doing for the day — it may be just film — but whatever we're trying to do, we should use the opportunity to get better.

Q: Let's hit the defensive end. What makes it work?

A: We play right out of an NBA base defense. I'd like to say we do all these different things but to be honest. I talked to Stan. He came to our training camp, stayed for three days and gave us notes and we sat and talked a lot. I went to Chicago for a day in September and talked to Tom Thibodeau. They both said the same thing: Establish your base defense and let that be the heart of it the first year and build from there.

Q: How important is making the playoffs this season for the growth of the team moving forward?

A: One, I believe these games, the last 18 games, will be a great experience for us. If we get the opportunity to play in the playoffs, it would be good for the city, good for the players and great for the organization to go through that.

For the players, the playoffs are a different level of execution and detail.
We have very good perimeter defenders so we don't have to double team. Josh, Cody and Anthony Tolliver, when he plays the four, naturally make multiple efforts, which is critical for a four-man. They can go from pick-and-roll to help and back which is huge in our league.

Q: What did you like about Charlotte when you were looking at the situation?

A: I'll be honest. I interviewed with three teams, and look, with my background where I didn't play in the league, the first team that offered me a job I was going to take it. That's just being honest.

But the thing I liked about my visit and the time I spent, I felt comfortable when I sat down with Rod Higgins and Rich Cho that we all had a similar idea philosophically how to build it — balanced play, size, skill. That's what we talked about. When I left there, I felt good about the meeting with them.

The other thing, the film work that I did. Last year, we lost in the first round of the playoffs with the Lakers, so I had time to study the team, and the thing I liked was the competitiveness of the younger players. Those were really the two things.

Q: Offensively, you said it's in the right direction the past 25 games. What are you looking for?

A: Within the offense, you need balance. For us, our post-up game is the best part of our offense. Not just Al scoring, but us being able to score on cuts and things off him, which is good because he'll make the right play.

The second-best part of our offense is Kemba's pick-and-roll game, which he's done a really good job at. He's still scoring but his assist-to-turnover numbers are way up over the last month or so.

Then, you have to have as many ways to score as possible — screening, five-man basketball — because when you play the best defensive teams, if you're just doing the same thing over and over again, they will take it away.

Q: Coaches come in and want to change a culture. Sometimes, it's easier said than done. How have you been able to accomplish that, by and large, with a lot of the same guys who have been there the past couple of seasons?

A: A lot of what we're trying to do is similar to what I learned from working for Jeff and Stan (Van Gundy). We're a culture of the right amount of work, where there's a definitive style of play which will lead to being able to win big in this league and then a level of accountability both from coaches to players and players to coaches and players to players.

All of that can only happen and work out well if you have the right kind of guys. So much of coaching, particularly at this level, is dictated by the character and competitiveness of your roster.

I know he has no reason to be attached to Charlotte, but part of me is already terrified that he's going to leave the Bobcats for a major market team in the not too distant future. He is a fantastic coach and we are so fortunate that he's here.

How many years is he signed for? I would absolutely give BRD an extension. I hope he stays for the long run.

He doesn't seem like he is the type of guy that would ditch a team because of its market and i don't think coaches care about market size anyway, i can't really think of any coaches (besides that douche Brian Shaw) that wouldn't coach a team or left because of market size, that is a players thing to do

We went out on a limb hiring him in a way, with the backlash of the Dunlap sacking to hiring another "unknown"

I hope Clifford appreciates that and he is in this for the long haul.

Agreed that it doesn't seem likely that he would bolt, but I guess that just shows my negative mentality about this team. Locking him down would be fantastic.

Stan van Gundy, himself admittedly biased, proposes Clifford as the winner of the Coach of the Year award. Do we believe that we have received plenty of attention for Clifford to win the award? There's no doubt that he's one of the best candidates for it, alongside Pop, Thibbs and Hornacek.

I think Clifford will get a good look at Coach of the Year if Charlotte can finish the season over .500 all the while grabbing the 6th seed in the Eastern Conference, and if the Suns don't make it into the postseason, but it's still a long shot

He just really knows what he's talking about and his sturdy hard-nosed disposition is perfect for this league. I was surprised to hear him rave about Buck Showalter because Clifford kind of reminds me of him. Growing up as a Yankees fan, the anchors would interview him during pregame and he would rattle off information about the opposing pitcher. He always stood out to me as an encyclopedia of information - like all he can think about is baseball to the point of obsession. Buck's downfall in NY was his ornery personality with upper management and owners. That's where I think Clifford is different. Though an expert he doesn't seem easy to frustrate and I think he can adapt when he doesn't get his way. Buck is very belligerent about his methodologies and he doesn't like being questioned. But he's an uncanny judge of talent in the sport of baseball. If Clifford is anywhere near the scout, the Hornets will be title contenders either next year or the year after.

Eric Spoelstra gets ranked 4th best?

I dunno, I think even Isiah Thomas could win a championship with that team

CoY for me is:

Horny (who saw them coming?)
Thibs (doing it again with a MASH unit)
Pop (could give him this award every year but that'd be boring)
Clifford (passes Pop and maybe Thibs if we get the 6th or better)

A lot of egos on that team. No matter who you are, 3 finals in a row, 2 straight titles. Impressive.

Just listened to Frank Isola, a longtime friend and fan of Cliff's, and Stacy King, interview Clifford on XM's Off The Dribble. Some highlights of note:

Said that with Kemba, Gerald & MKG they have excellent perimeter defenders, so that enables them to defend without double teams and complicated schemes.

Retold the story about visiting Thibs in Sept, and getting advise from Thibs to concentrate in Year 1 on installing a basic defense.

Said that McRoberts and Zeller both intelligent, what he called multiple effort, defenders that enable them to have a good pick and roll defense.

Added that Al has been much better than anyone expected on defense.

Stacy King said he thinks Hendo is an underrated player. Cliff said that Gerald can guard the best 2 guards in the league, has a spot and shoot game plus a post up and iso game. But most of all he says that Hendo is very bright on the floor and is a great communicator. He said that when Gerald is on the floor he can expect the team to execute.

Said Al Jeff has done way more for this team than just on the court, has been terrific in the locker room.

Also said that it took a long time to learn to execute an offense run through the post, that doing so is much harder than running the pnr offense favored throughout the league. And that Al being out there has allowed the other players to be in better positions, adding that while Kemba and Gerald are both very good they are not first offensive options and Al has taken the pressure to score off of them.

Clifford comes off as likable and solidly knowledgeable. Stacy King, Bulls analyst, likened him to Thibs in that he gets the best out of all the players on his roster. This guy really represents, we should all be proud to have him as CHA coach.

I have recently seen some very good arguments for Steve Clifford garnishing the Coach of the Year award at season's end. Personally, I think it should be narrowed down to Clifford or Tom Thibodeau if Jeff Hornacek and the Suns fail to reach the playoffs, with Clifford getting the slight nod

You can't really punish coach Hornacek if the Suns don't make the playoffs by not giving him the COY, they would probably be the 3 seed in the East
