Would you trade Dennis for Giannis?

Post#1 » by azuresou1 » Tue Mar 18, 2014 1:54 pm

Many NBA executives believed that Antetokounmpo received a promise from the Atlanta Hawks with the 17th overall pick.

We likely would have drafted Giannis instead of Schroeder, but the Bucks picked him up instead. Now, not sure how they feel about Brandon Knight as their PG of the future, so this may be irrelevant... but IF they weren't so hot on him, would you swap Dennis for Giannis?

There is no way they would do the deal anyway.

But that being said, I would do the deal in a heartbeat. He has such a high ceiling and has made such improvements. The fact he will end up being a 7 footer is nice as well.

I am not a huge Dennis fan (surprise there), so it is easier for me to make the trade.

Of course. Even if Dennis reaches his full potential I'm still not sold on a pure passing point making that much of a difference in today's NBA. The jury is still out on Rondo post Big Three era and his surgery but other guys such as Paul and Wall can carry their teams with their scoring whereas a guy like Rubio can only defer to others. Giannis looks like he has Iguodala as his floor.

For some perspective here, I've seen Giannis called the best prospect in last year's draft and the clear #1 pick in a re-draft. I can't say that I whole-heartedly agree, but considering age, current production, and upside, I would have to think he's definitely in the top 5. Schröder might eventually be a guy that would be thought of as highly, but he isn't there now. This would be an easy decision.

As an aside, I always thought that the fact MIL scooped him from us was Drew's doing. We supposedly promised Giannis very early in the process (I think it was during a EuroCamp which he wasn't a part of, but his team did play a couple of games within an hour's drive) and I believe LD was still technically our coach. Now, we probably didn't outright tell him this, but I'd guess it was office scuttlebutt and LD was still showing up for work. After the two sides parted, this piece of information would be invaluable to a team picking just two slots ahead of us.

Ferry indecisiveness in wanting to keep LD or not really ticked me. How could Ferry think it was a good idea to keep this guy around, let him in on our scouting reports then let him interview with others in which he could potential expose all of our scouting reports.

He should of been fired the moment the season ended because it was obvious he wasnt the right coach for the team in the future.

Yeah, I have to agree with that decision (or lack of one) being highly questionable at best. I mean I could understand it if Ferry wanted to let Drew finish all the exit interviews before meeting with him, but we were into Mid-May before it was clear that we weren't keeping Drew. I'd could see it if we were just throwing lines in the water in an attempt to land a big fish (ala SVG), but we weren't really that close in landing any of those names - at least not publicly. I mean, if we were willing to settle on an Assistant Coach from another team over Drew, then why not go ahead and just cut bait.

Out of all the decisions Ferry has made in the FO, this is the one that I really don't understand at any level. Hopefully, Coach Bud will prove out that Ferry doesn't have to go through another coach firing/hiring again. The early returns are positive at least.

There is info on the Bucks board that after Giannis was drafted that ATL offered #16 + #17 for him and MIL declined

This lets me know that Ferry knew he **** up by letting LD in on the scouting reports and was now in desperation mode to try to get his guy.

What an idiotic tactic by Ferry.

Maybe they wanted to draft him anyways? Milwaukee seems to have a thing for drafting lanky athletic raw tall dudes.

OR

Milwaukee was always going to draft him anyways, and Ferry still wanted him

While I would freely admit that I don't know MIL's motives (then or now), I still think their drafting of Giannis had more to do with LD's hiring than a decision made in a vacuum. On top of the supposition I threw out above that MIL probably knew that we were in on Giannis, the other factor here is that I also think MIL knew that they were going to make a run at Teague and wanted some fodder for us in a SNT. I had a sleep deprived rambling post about this at the time, but there was some evidence to back it up and the timeline (including the new bit of information in the same article in the OP about MIL's GM decision a good 3 days before the draft) add to the theory. The basic upshot is that we were the issue and we drug our feet so long in the deal that MIL finally had to push the envelope.
