Projected starting lineups for 2014
Don't know how many are aware of this site but this is their projected starting line-up. On paper we actually don't look that bad.

Our rotation and bench look horrible.

On paper we look like the same team that crapped the bed last year.

Re: Projected starting lineups for 2014
I don't see the Jays adding anyone from now until the start of the season (unless one of Ubaldo or Santana agree to work for minimum wage) so I think the roster is pretty much set. It is just a matter of how many relievers they plan on starting the season with. If they go with 8 relievers, then they are looking at a Sierra, Izturis, and Thole/Kratz bench. If they go with 7 relievers, then they can add a back-up CF to the bench group. A lot will depend on who the 5th starter is as well. With so many fringy pitchers being out of options, I think one of them (most likely Redmond) will make the team as the last starter, and to protect against his implosion (in addition to being able to keep an arm instead of losing one), they will carry an extra arm. I'm not sure keeping Perez or Jeffress is worth having a short-handed bench, but I don't think they have much of a choice, barring a Ricky Romero Spring Training miracle.

They let Jeff Baker sign on with the Marlins for pennies ( in baseball) , so yeah, we are pretty much broke for this off-season.

Re: Projected starting lineups for 2014
I disagree because half our starting line-up was hurt half the season. IF Melky, Reyes, Dickey and Bautista go back to normal that's 5-10 more wins right there. I need to check how many Wins they give you in a regular season compared to last season for the delta.
But I do agree we have a ton of fringy starters that we're hoping a couple can get it together.

Also the same team (minus Johnson) that was favoured to win the WS before injuries and below career average performances caused them to crap the bed.
If pitching turns out to be somewhere around league average I think they'll be in the playoff race.

Re: Projected starting lineups for 2014
Offense - looks very good, only big concern is 2B
Bullpen - looks great
Rotation - huge question mark, could be really good if Morrow and Dickey return to form and one of Hutch and Stroman shine through, or could **** the bed again
It's hard to see how this group could be any worse than last year, so let's hope they get off to a great start and we'll see what happens.

Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

On the starting rotation, with the exception of Morrow if we're doubly lucky - he pitches like he did two years ago and he remains healthy for 180 innings - who else can consistent keep us in low-scoring games through six innings?

That's certainly true, but it would take an awful lot of things to go diametrically opposite of last season for this team, as constituted, to make the playoffs. Can certainly happen, but the odds on that much positive turnaround are rather huge.

Re: Projected starting lineups for 2014
We had team crushing weaknesses in 3/5ths of our rotation last year and 4 lineup spots. We had some of the worst production in those spots that you could find anywhere in the MLB.
LF - Melky, negative WAR
2B - Izturis, negative WAR
C - JPA, negative or 0 WAR
3B - When Lawrie was hurt, negative WAR.
Hopefully Navarro fixes C. Melky/Sierra/Gose can get LF at least above replacement level. Lawrie stays healthy at 3B and Goins can at least give us some D at 2b.
If we sign Jimenez/Santana and Morrow comes back, that's a gigantic boost. Add a 5th SP from Hutch, Stroman, Redmond, Rogers, Happ and we're so much better off.

Bench has always been horrible under AA. We fill the bench with a bunch of old dinosaurs and AAA scrubs and they end up getting **** ton of playing time due to injuries.

We are one inevitable Jose Reyes injury away from having a Goins/Izturis middle infield.

Re: Projected starting lineups for 2014
Given where we are in Spring Training, what does the projected starting lineup now look like?
For pitchers it's -
Dickey
Buerhle
Morrow
Hutchinson
Happ
Stohman
Romero as the first to be called up
Then Sanchez / Drabek

Romero definitely isn't getting the first call up unless he somehow becomes a different pitcher than he has been for the past 2 years, Sanchez's ETA is likely at least a year away, and Drabek isn't anywhere on the map. You're looking at Redmond, Rogers, and Stroman as the probable 6, 7, and 8 starters right now. After that, it's guys like Nolin and Jenkins.

No, I didn't. He was the 5.

That was with the assumption that Dickey and Johnson pitch like number one starters, and we actually have a major league caliber player at 2nd base. Johnson isn't even here, Dickey is obviously more of a number 2 guy, and we still have Ryan **** Goins starting.
