Daryl Morey admits GM's browse Message Boards

Post#1 » by tsquareddd » Wed Mar 26, 2014 12:30 am

http://extramustard.si.com/2014/03/25/daryl-morey-message-boards/

The majority of sports fans are reasonable people who have a lot of varying passions and interests. But there is a certain sect of sports fans for whom watching actual games is only but a small aspect of their dedication to a team. These are the people who spend a good chunk of their free time browsing message boards, positing theories and deconstructing the opinions of their fellow addic… er… fans. I’ve been a sports message board frequenter since I was in my teens, and it can get, well, pretty weird. The community aspect of these message boards often keeps people coming back on a daily basis, just for their own entertainment. For the most part, these people are never under the assumption that what they’re doing is actually constructive… until now.

According to Rockets GM Daryl Morey, the time that fans spend theorizing player signings and trade scenarios isn’t completely wasted.

We do RT @jamesasteven: @dmorey Do nba GMs (to your knowledge) ever gain trade/transaction ideas from online message boards/fans?

Meaning any of our past posts could have swayed a franchise-altering move and changed the lives of many people.

That's awesome

And we've seen a lot of trades in the trade board that actually happened or at least were very close in terms of players/picks involved.

Sometimes we can see a lot of good stuff in the trade board. It doesn't hurt to take a look, even if you're a GM.
Shaq on Duncan:SA won because of TD, a guy I could never break.I could talk trash to Ewing, get in D-Rob's face, get a rise out of Mourning, but when I went at Tim he’d look at me like he was bored and say:“Hey,Shaq, watch this shot right off the glass.”

This sort of thing blew up in GSW's face in 2009 when the infamous "flunkster dude" posted on warriorsworld.

http://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/Ra ... 230477.php

"So it was when Warriors media relations director Raymond Ridder, signed on as "The Flunkster Dude," was detected defending new general manager Larry Riley on the blog site WarriorsWorld after a conference call with season-ticket holders. He got far less than the desired result."

Also, I'll bet more then a few NBA GMs found out about realgm's trade checker back in the day and used it quite often as a quick check to see if a deal was even feasible. Kudos to realgm and their trade checker.

In related news, message board members quietly admit it feels good to be wanted.

I mean why wouldn't they? When a ton of opinions are out out, it gives you stuff you might not have thought of and ideas to sift through. Quite logical really, and even sometimes probably just for entertainment they would sift through to see what the fans are thinking.

I wish Rob Babcock consulted with the RealGM forums before deciding to trade VC for Eric Williams, Aaron Williams & the ghost of Alonzo Mourning

Yep. I've always thought that many NBA GM's aren't taking enough of my advice, now it's confirmed.

Yes, I'm sure the geniuses on RGM all played a part in all the great trades that have happened.

Of course, not the crap ones, though!

Of course they browse forums. So do athletes. What, did you think they lived in a vacuum?

Yo, Garpax, go get Melo! If you absolutely have to dump Taj then just draft Adreian Payne late in the first.
Just a must-watch army of possessed ass-kickers laying the smack down night after night after night. People are gonna hate playing the Bulls this year.

Realgm is the go to site for basketball people imo.

The site is actually (built) for NBA teams also and people forget that.

I'd bet there are players in the NBA today (probably the 90's kids) that browsed this site. I mean, if you're an NBA addict, where else would you go?
