Ernie Grunfeld started a thread on the Wizards board.

I have a feeling many GMs come on this board read an opinion and do the exact opposite. Would be fool proof.

When you think about it, if a team is trying to make moves to appease their fanbase and win fans back (which a lot of bad teams do), what better way to get an idea of what their fans want than message boards and comment sections of articles? Its not much different than what teams have done for years, in terms of signing big names to sell tickets. Sports are all about marketing and the internet is a great new way to find out what your customers want. I think teams put comment sections on their website articles for a reason, and there's probably someone in the marketing department who is responsible for reading them to get an idea of what fans are thinking to better market the team to them.

That said I doubt any teams are making decisions just based on what fans are saying about a player or trade. It can probably be a useful resource for them, but in the end they aren't trading a player just because a bunch of fans say to lol.

Man that's gotta be rough to browse through a message board only to find a bunch of random strangers crapping all over your life's work

In light of this news, I'm taking credit for the Rudy Gay trade.

The Sixers co-owner at a time a few years ago admitted to me on twitter that he's actually a big fan of real gm message boards.

Maybe, every once in a while, John Hammond should read the Bucks threads .

While I don't believe every athlete/GM looks at message boards, I don't see how many don't. I imagine most people in life are curious about what is said about them. Though I can also imagine some people staying away just because that might drive them insane (that would be my personal hell).

Imagine how cool would be one of us to get a job offer from a team based on his comments here...

Every trade I've ever posted was actually a request from a GM who wanted to feel out responses from different fanbases and get a different perspective.

"So it was when Warriors media relations director Raymond Ridder, signed on as "The Flunkster Dude," was detected defending new general manager Larry Riley on the blog site WarriorsWorld after a conference call with season-ticket holders. He got far less than the desired result."

Also, I'll bet more then a few NBA GMs found out about realgm's trade checker back in the day and used it quite often as a quick check to see if a deal was even feasible. Kudos to realgm and their trade checker.

I've always suspected that around half the warriors fans on the trade board are directly in the pay of management. You don't get stuff like old rem's "Nelly has got this team playing 0.500 ball, it just hasn't shown up in the standings yet" without someone cashing a pay-cheque.

There was an incident a few years back in the playoffs where a bench player for the Wiz, Juan Dixon I think, announced after a rare good game that he'd been motivated by reading a 20 page "Juan Dixon is an ovverated scrub" thread on realgm. So I guess calling out your players sometimes works...

Imagine how emotionally traumatized Colangelo was after an hour of RealGM.
