Another ridiculously efficient 30 point game in only three quarters.

For Durant, that's 60 points on 18/24 shooting in the last two games. Has 15 assists against just 4 turnovers in a combined 58 minutes, too.
Said in a thread about which point guards would make OKC better if they replaced Westbrook:

Would be impressive. I believe 40 games is the 3rd longest 25+ points streak in league history.
Now that's the difference between first and last place.

Wilt 10/19/61-12/14/62 (106 games)
Oscar 12/25/63-10/17/64 (47 games)
MJ 12/16/86-3/11/87 (40 games)
MJ 3/7/88-12/6/88 (40 games)
Durant 1/7/14-present (38 games)
Now that's the difference between first and last place.

Since the Merger, which is what I myself would consider for statistics like this.

Why is nearly half of the league history not relevant for statistics like this?

If you think that history is relevant for statistics like this, by all means be my guest. I am not going to disagree with you and I don't understand why you would disagree with me.
However, lets not kid ourselves with senseless claims of "nearly half of the league history.." crap because the league had 10 or teams from 1947-1970.
The talent was much worse in the NBA until the merger so using statistics like this in a less-talented league is something I disagree with. If you find it fitting for yourself, go ahead

That's all well and good if you choose to feel that way, but let's not call it a record then, especially an all-time record.
Now that's the difference between first and last place.

All-time record since the merger, which I specified

Re: 2013-14 MVP Discussion Thread Pt III
Now we have a shift.
With Miami taking the lead in the East, the conversation changes. I've talked a lot in this thread about the Kobe vs CP3 debate in 2007-08, now we might move into the Kobe vs Garnett in 2007-08 area.
Miami is 1st in the East, and OKC is 2nd in the West. In 2007-08, Kevin Garnett (3rd in MVP voting) and the Celtics won the East in the regular season and had the best record in the league, better than Kobe and the Lakers. But Kobe still won MVP. Kobe and the Lakers beat out CP3 and the Hornets to win the West in the regular season.
The season isn't over, of course. And OKC may still top the Spurs in the West. But if Miami can hang on to win the East, that helps LeBron considerably.
Here is the updated "Without" picture.
Without Westbrook ------ 25-10 ---- .714 ---- 03-2 in last 05 games ---- 35 games
Without Wade ------------ 15-07 ---- .682 ---- 10-1 in last 11 games ---- 22 games
Without Wade projected over 35 games at .682 winning percentage = 24-11
Thus, Durant's "Without Westbrook" advantage is basically gone now, except that he has had to play 13 more games without Westbrook than LeBron has had to play without Wade. But Wade may miss more time.
Durant's two best narratives now, I think, are "better record" and "MJ streak." The MJ streak could bring home the award for him. He also has the better stats.
However, as Chris Paul found out, voters tend to like it when you win your conference. I mentioned a few weeks ago that the one thing I could see turning this race around a bit was if Durant or LeBron's team got the conference lead. That has happened now.
LeBron had 32/7/8 tonight without Wade in a game that the Heat needed to win in order to take over first in the East.
Good night for LeBron. This isn't over yet, I don't think. If Miami wins the East and OKC does not win the West, and LeBron can play well the last three weeks, this could become interesting.

lol apologies if I came off like a tool, just giving you a hard time with the specific language.
No offense attended, my good man.

I genuinely think you're just trying to be controversial, or a troll (in which case I've bitten).
LeBron hasn't been good enough individually to make team record even a deciding factor, but no one is going to look at Miami winning an awful conference as a tie-breaker over OKC having a better record but finishing 2nd in a stacked West.
Not to mention Miami are about a .500 team since the break and have fallen into top spot by virtue of Indiana's appalling run, and the East is so bad this year people are talking about changing the playoff format.
Miami winning the East changes nothing in this race, which is over anyway.

I am definitely not a troll. I call it as I see it.
Winning a conference matters. Not only did Kobe have a better record than CP3, the Lakers also won the Conference. Garnett had the better record than Kobe, but Kobe still won the MVP.
This changes things. I said this could happen several weeks ago in this thread, exactly this scenario. Do I favor Durant? Sure. But I favor him less now than would be the case had Miami not overtaken Indiana. Also the "Without Wade" recent progress has helped LeBron.
Durant still has the better record, but my guess is the MJ Streak is his best bet now to grab MVP. But I don't think it's over, I really don't. If the Heat had a bad record against the West (the "East sucks" theme), then it would probably be over. But the Heat don't have a bad record against the West.
