Penn and Pritchard have done absolutely nothing. The injury excuse is flawed because no one knows how that team would've ended up. These were also the guys who passed on maybe the best scorer of all-time for Oden. Even if he stayed healthy, no one knows how great Oden would've actually been. So we can't just assume he was going to be great because he was hyped up to be great. Its possible he was just another 10-10 guy with good defense like Okafor, in which case that would've been a colossal blunder taking him over Durant, even if healthy.
I also think Roy was always overrated. He was a good SG, but he was no Kobe or Wade. So lets not act like that team was something more than it was.
Even if you loved those players and thought they were great picks, any GM can hit on a couple lotto picks. That doesn't prove he knows how to build a championship team around them. People say Dumars doesn't deserve credit for the Drummond and Monroe picks because he just took the BPA, so why does Penn and Pritchard get so much credit for taking Oden, LMA, and Roy?
And for the record, he didn't even draft LMA and Roy. He was only their assistant GM at the time of those drafts. The "good" draft pick he made was passing on Durant for Oden.
Don't forget about him trading Zach Randoplh in his prime to the Knicks for Steve Francis and Channing Frye too. People made fun of Isiah when he traded for Francis, but he turned around and suckered Pritchard out of his best player for him. So if you think lowly of Isiah, what does that say about Pritchard?
His job with the Pacers proves nothing either, as that's all Larry Bird's team.
Even if you wanted to hire him as our GM, he's already got that title with the Pacers, so why would he take the same job here?
As for Tom Penn, he's nothing more than a cap guy, who is now basically a used car salesman for ESPN's draft coverage. Might as well just hire Chad Ford.
I honestly don't get the fascination with these guys at all.
