If we tie Sacramento for 7th worst record...

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Thu Apr 3, 2014 11:40 pm

what happens?

Do we share ping pong balls?
Do we go through extensive tie-breaker rules that they use for the playoffs?
Do they flip a coin to see who gets 7th and 8th?

This, I believe.

But, I doubt we finish tied with the Kings. We'll probably be in 8th when the dust settles.

Since we've been going thru coin flips the last few times we've tied I have to believe it'll be another flip. I think their is a chance we could end up tied , but I've always been a glass is half full kind of guy.

Share ping pong balls for equal odds of (7+8) /2, but then a coin flip would decide 7th vs 8th spots should neither team move up.

So in ultimate bad luck we lose the coin flip and then have a team leap frog up to the lottery thus pushing us back to 9th and lose the pick to Charlotte.

But we're not going to tie Sacto so it's moot anyways.

Coin flip. I think the same situation happened with us last year, and we won the coin flip with Washington so we were supposed to pick #7...but then the Wizards went ahead and jumped from #8 to #3 anyway (bastards, lol).

Also in the 2010 draft we lost the coin flip for the 6th pick to the Sixers and then they jumped to #2 (although they ended up drafting Evan Turner who just got traded for a 2nd round pick and we got Monroe).

Say what?
They can't be leap frogged after the coin flip. The season is over.

I honestly don't know how that would work.

The coin flip decides who gets the 7/8 spots and the respective combo of ping pong balls. Last year we won the flip against Washington and then their set of lotto balls ended up at pick 3. If our luck is such that we win the 7 pick only to have the team we beat for it get the 3rd pick and push us back to 8 anyways, I wouldn't put it past us to lose the flip to the 8th spot then have the lotto knock us down to 9, thus losing our pick.

The way you stated this makes it seem like there's 2 coin flips, one before and after the lottery. If we end up tied 7th worse, win the flip for the 7th spot, but Sacramento leapfrogs us with their ping pong balls, we'll just be picking 8th. Of course this is provided no other team behind us jumps into the top 3.

I'm having cold sweats and nightmares about losing this pick in the last game. Jennings and Smith going on a tear all of a sudden and us losing the pick to Charlotte.

I'm dead serious here.

My ultimate fears for this year were as follows-

1. Josh & Jennings keeping us from the playoffs (which they've done)

2. Josh & Jennings keeping us around the 8th pick (which they've done)

3. a stupid win or 2 costing us a 5th or 6th pick. (which is exactly where we are)

4. Getting the 8th pick & having a team behind us jump us to which we lose the pick.

Ok, Kevin Pelton's chat today shared what really happens:

kyle (missouri)
Who owns the tie between the Sacramento Kings and the Detroit Pistons?
Kevin Pelton
In terms of draft positioning, tie-breakers don't come into play. The lottery chances are split and the position entering the lottery is determined by a coin flip.

So the ping pong balls ARE shared. But once the top three teams are decided, then there needs to be an order of the non-lottery winners. That is what the coin flip decides.
