DET/UTAH
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Re: DET/UTAH
I think it's a win-win. Fills needs for both teams. I guess it depends on the contract. I don't think Hayward's worth more than 8-9M or so, but DET needs help because they'll have no pick to tank for next season so they may overpay a little to get it done.
investigate Adam Silver

Re: DET/UTAH
S&T can't happen for about a month after the drafts making this really difficult/rare
They could agree to it on draft night but who is there at 8 that Utah would like more than Hayward? Harris/Vonleh/etc? Not really.
I don't see anybody really. I think Utah would more likely be trading Kanter in the draft for McDermott/Anderson (looking at Philly at 10th) after drafting Randle.. But Utah fans might hate that idea.

Sometime in July. The real question is for Piston fans, would you rather have one of the guys that will likely be there at #8 for $3M or Hayward for $12M. This was the original question anyway.

I'd rather have the pick, but was curious what others would think.

I voted Utah, it has the s/t with a draft pick difficulty, but is possible still. I'm not a huge Hayward fan though, so that's playing into it as well. Liked him a lot in college, but I think I'm biased b/c against OKC I never knew what to expect from him (went off one game, one horrible game, 2 meh games one of which Utah was blown out).

So Utah wouldn't actually have any say on who Detroit drafts at #8.

I may be mistaken here, but I think that if Jonas Jerebko opts out of his contract (as rumored on WT) the Pistons would have the cap space to make a sizable offer to Hayward and then re-sign Monroe while also keeping their pick. If that's the case, I don't see why Detroit would go this route.
Now, if Utah wants to talk about taking Josh Smith in a S&T for Hayward …

I think Monroe's cap hold is 250% of this years contract (that's true with all four year full bird rights).. Would Det still have the cap space if that was true?
