Hawks Admit Playoffs 'Not Our Goal'

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Thu Apr 3, 2014 2:28 am

Danny Ferry is pleased with the direction of the Atlanta Hawks, who have fallen to 32-41 after standing at 25-21 on Feb. 1.

"Throughout the year, I felt we've been on a good path," Ferry said. "When healthy, we've been a very good team. I like the way we play. It's system-based. I like our players. There's some substance to them. With the way we're set-up from a salary cap standpoint and a roster standpoint that good things can continue to unfold.

"We're not focused on trying to be the eighth seed in the playoffs because that's not our goal. We're trying to build something that's good, sustainable and the components are in place for us to do so."

We are officially the ninth seed and into the lottery after Tuesday's loss. Time to embrace the Player Development . Dennis and Muscala need to get more PT and...embrace the disappointment this season has become.

Update those mock drafts, boys. As of this moment, we're @ #10 in the draft.

Wish we'd just embraced this earlier and let Dennis get extensive PT at PG all year.

No we aren't in 9th. We are basically 2 games up on New York still...one game in the loss column and if we tie we have the tie break.

:o

and the Knicks beat the city rival Brooklyn Nets 110-81 Wednesday night to move percentage points ahead of Atlanta for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

The Hawks (32-42, .432) fell behind the Knicks (33-43, .432) by .002 percentage points for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

If you say so, but every NBA standings I can find now lists NY Knicks as the 8th seed with New York being ahead of us in 'Wins' and percentage points....

yeah we are 1 game up in the loss column and we own the tie breaker. We are in 9th right now, but if the season ended where NYK had the same number of games as us, we would win IIRC. NYK have 2 games more played that us look at the record.

NYK have 1 more LOSS and 1 MORE win total. they have played 76 games we have played 74. IF we split the last two games and go 1-1 we would win vs them. We own the tie breaker

I hope we dont make the playoffs UNLESS we play Miami because then I can sell my tickets for $500 a piece to bandwagon people.

But I embrace the lottery. Bring me an ELITE SG

Hey, what can you do? I'll take it like a man. I do embrace the lottery however, we might be in the 10 spot but who knows? Maybe those ping pong balls fall our way and we get a top 3 pick!

At this point, I kinda want Bud to start Dennis and Muscala and see what the kids got. No quick hooks. No looking over their shoulder.

It's pretty much to our benefit 100% if we just let it go and let the young'ns play.

Hell, I might even be okay with letting Mike Scott start a few games, too......

Who really cares if the Hawks are in the playoffs or out of the playoffs, one game back, half a game ahead, half a percentage point behind, more games played, less games played, blah blah, etc..........

its all pointless, the Hawks are now competing with the Cavs for the 9th or 8th lotto spot. the Cavs are only two games behind the Hawks and the Hawks are facing the Cavs next.

Cleveland has won 5 of their last 6, beating quality teams like the Knicks, Raptors, and Pacers. The Cleveland players think, and are playing like they have a realistic shot at the playoffs. Kyrie is back and healthy, and the Cavs have a good shot at ending the season on a 3 game winning streak by facing the Bucks, Celtics, and Nets

I have playoff tickets if they make it, so I care.

Do you know how much Miami Heat tickets will sell for to all these bandwagon fans?

I'm dying of laughter knowing that Panda's primary reason for wanting the Hawks in the playoffs is so he can scalp some tickets. Can say a lot about this fanbase but at least we are honest.

Honestly it would be better for my season tickets if they got a top 5 lottery pick, I was just trying to look on the positive side no matter what :)

Draftexpress.com has released the first of the new mock drafts reflecting us with a lottery pick.

The first has us taking Justin Nurkic. 6'11" 280 pounds. But very, very young.

Keep in mind these don't take into account team needs, just best player available.

If making the 8th seed isn't our goal, player development and a high draft pick must be. Though acquiring Nurkic might be a tad overkill in the "We need a center" response, considering we have Muscala and Bebe under contract for the next few seasons.

If we fall in the 8-10 are we should look at Noah Vonleh.

From the "8th seed is not our goal" to "the playoffs is not our goal". The whole thing reads like Ferry doesn't consider the 8th seed as an accomplishment but based on that read and every other sign he's given during his short tenure here I really don't know how it gets interpreted as "we are tanking". He even praises the "substance" of the guys for continuing to put up a fight so I don't see how he'd get away with asking either them or Bud to take it easy down the stretch.

I agree with MaceCase there is no way coach bud and the boys aren't trying their hardest to make the playoffs and ferry's hands are tied. Tanking is out of the question at this point.

The best-case scenario imo is if this current hawks team can relive the '07 hawks and take the #1 seed to a game 7. The city needs a strong playoff showing to embrace the hawks even more and I believe millsap who always plays well against the heat can do it for us joe johnson style!

There's nothing I would love more than to knock Miami out in the first round, but even taking them to 6 can give the city something to rally around basketball wise: it might even give us some positive exposure to FAs.
