What is it with some fans and the "X" Player vs. "Y" Player mentality?

I am just thrilled that we have both guys on this team.

I know, we all should be happy to have this much talent around us but the team had to make sacrifices (particularly Asik/Lin's playing time) to accommodate 2 "prime" players in Harden and Howard, I guess some of us aren't impressed with Howard's track record at Orlando and LA and Harden who is still playing with a 6th man scoring mentality.

You're clearly a Lin fan, only a LOF will say something like this.
Since All star:

Yea 6th man scoring

Harden is the best thing that happened to the Rockets since Hakeem Olajuwon's era, TMac n Yao were too injured to get anything going, except for the one or two PO series were they were actually healthy n couldn't get outta the first round.

BTW Harden is 300 k times better player than Lin will ever be, so yea take as much Lin's playing time as he wants

Without Harden n Dwight we would only dream of playoffs, without Dwight we would be fighting for the 8th seed right now, n no chance of passing the first round. These people just don't get it, yea lets let Lin n Asik play but let's not be contenders, lets not have superstars .

If you're still basing your opinion of Howard off of his time in Orlando and Los Angeles then I don't know what to say. I'm basing my opinion of Howard off of his time in Houston where he's helped to lead the Rockets to their best record in almost 20 years. As for Harden...6th man scoring mentality - that was something that you could say last year and the early part of this season, but he's clearly rounding out his game now. He's starting to accept the role that this is his team, but that he's not alone.

Several things come to mind when I think about Howard:
- Howard is all athleticism, which gets him individual accolades such as defensive player of the year and league's best rebound, but not enough to beat Detroit, LA or Boston when he finally realised that basketball is actually a team sport where you also need to score and set up plays for the rest of the team
- Howard turned crybaby after the first round loss to Atlanta during the 2010-2011 season and wanted his coach fired, he's been playing halfheartedly ever since
- For all the hype of becoming the next Shaq, he has yet to live up to expectations let alone win 4 championships

And for the record, Howard WAS one of my favourite player, but his attitude during the last season with Orlando and LA left a big question mark on his commitment as a player, particularly at LA where he had all the right players with him (not around him) to win a championship. He proved to be a difficult player to coach and play with. I just feel that after trying so hard during the early years at Orlando he just wants to cruise into a championship-ready team and win it lazily, not that Houston is ready but it was the next team he thought would be best...for now. I'm not even sure if Houston is going to be Howard's last stop with an NBA team.

Harden started out as 6th man because of his offense and his ability to score, not much of anything else defensively. As a starter, he's still the same player but with substantially more minutes and more plays set up for him, and he is playing exactly the same way as Melo. Like Melo, I believe he will develop his passing skills and maybe some toughness defensively but as long as there are Lebrons and future Lebrons in this league he will probably just put all his energy in shooting the ball, just like Melo did.
* Since 1985, Jeremy Lin became one of 15 players to have scored at least 20 points, seven assists and a steal for six games in a row, including 136 points in 5 starts beating out Iverson, Jordan and O'Neal :D

If I was an "only fan" for a particular player then it would have to be Tim Duncan, the best power forward/center ever to play the game. I like any player who works hard to get to where they are and still keep working hard. That's why I like players like Lin.

If there was a trade for Tim Duncan that would send Howard to San Antonio I would be happier, but I'm not sure if Howard would be happy working with Pops

Most players in the NBA work hard, n try to get better, especially the good ones, basketball is their job n if they suck at it, they don't get a good payday. That's why average NBA career is 5-6 years.

So you would take 37 year old Tim Duncan over Dwight right now? Wow, I'm glad u're not in our FO.

You know what? I'm glad no fans are in our FO, that's why all these fans speculation for players trade and comparison mean very little.

And yes I would go with a healthy 37 year old Tim Duncan over Dwight but the point is that Dwight would never play for a hard-nosed coach like Pop.

Is it possible that Asik is the better fit with the starters?

Is there any doubt about the security of his starting position creeping in Dwight's mind?

Given his turn to comment about the Rockets’ apparent battle for the starting Center position, Dwight Howard said he was unconcerned with the choice, calling it “a luxury to have two great Centers.

“It doesn’t matter and it shouldn’t matter to any of us who starts the game or whatever,” Howard said. “The biggest thing is that we all accept our roles. If we do that, we will have a great season. We can’t allow anything to affect us as a team and pull us in the wrong direction. I enjoy playing with both of those units.
