Smith on a talent standpoint could be a top ten player. He's very talented can do a little bit of everything. But his IQ is so bad that he just hurts your team more then helps. So to the topic, He would be more talented than anyone on your roster but Jefferson and Kemba are better players if that makes sense. Hell I would take MKG over him as well.

If Smith played at PF and had the brain of the average chicken he would be a top 15 player easily

I agree that this season Josh Smith isn't anywhere near being a good or all-star level player but I blame that more on the situation. He was the player that put up those numbers you mentioned in Atlanta. I'm judging him as a player based on that because that is what he does on a good team in a good situation. He is playing out of position for a bad coach and on a team in tank mode so I give him a pass on this season. AJ actually shot a three the other night and it didn't look bad at all.

whoa, whoa, whoa, stop right there. he might have elite defensive talent, but it's been a while since I've seen him play elite defense. his mind seems to be drifting non-stop. He blatantly forgets to box out and thus gives up offensive rebounds, he goes for uncalled double teams that leave his team in a frenzy, he gets caught ball watching and forgets about his man - those all are very bad habits and habits that describe Josh Smith's play game to game.

highlights to me that coaching and system could help fix a lot of these habits, which is why I could see a new coach turning that team around.

heck imagine our team if Clifford managed to get Smith to buy into his system, he could be fantastic next to big Al.
He's averaged 4 assists a game a couple of times in his career.

Detroit is going to make the playoffs next year. I'd put money on it. They'll have a real coach, they'll manage to move Smith or Monroe, they'll have a good pick in a great draft, and I think next year is the year that Drummond breaks out.

That is why most of us want to either get the pick this season or trade it ASAP

Yeah, unfortunately that dream is dead. Detroit's schedule is pretty brutal. The only 2 winnable games on there really are Atlanta and Cleveland. Even if they win both of those, Cleveland then would have to lose to Boston and Philly both which won't happen.

I'm not worried about the Pistons pick next year being any worst than 16th. I actually expect them to have a similar season to this season next year or worst. I see it as a top 10 pick for 2015.

But!!! I wouldn't be mad if a team or two jumped Detroit in the lottery draft giving us the 10th or 11th pick so we can draft James Young. Young would be a good fit at SG for our future.

The only way to get a high enough pick to draft James Young would be to trade the Pistons top-1 protected pick 2015. He's better than Gary Harris and some said they would trade the pick later to draft Harris now.

I wouldn't do it for Young (and of course not Harris) but that's what it would take imo.

We still have a shot at getting the pick. After Detroit beats Atlanta tonight they will be 2 games back of the Cavs.

Josh Smith out for possibly the rest of the season with knee tendinitis. Obvioulsy a tank attempt but that will actually probably cause us to start winning games now lol.

That Cleveland Detroit game tomorrow could end up being a big game..

im watching them play now, its still pretty ugly and Monroe isn't getting the ball in the greatest spots.

offence, seems really random.

all this Detroit optimism doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. people are arguing the exact same points that they argued coming into this year. "new coach, Drummond is gonna break out" etc etc. Still think they bottom out before climbing back up. new GM firesale

top 10 pick, lots of cap space, new coach and GM they cant possibly screw up all that....and also i dont think they will even attempt to tank considering their pick is Top 1 protected which basically means its unprotected so there isn't any point in tanking if you get no "reward" for it

I'm pretty sure that James Young will be available with the Portland pick.

I'm sure there is a way to screw that up. Joe Dumars has been doing it for the past half a decade. With their top-10 pick, let's say they draft Aaron Gordon or Gary Harris instead of Doug McDermott or James Young? I don't see them getting better in that scenario. With the cap space, what free agent this offseason do you believe can really turn around their fortunes? I say they'll likely overpay for Lance Stephenson assuming he's a star in the making only to watch his personality clash with the likes of other questionable characters a la Brandon Jennings & Josh Smith. As far as the new head coach & GM, there's no guarantee they'll hire a good head coach or GM or even competent ones. They did hire Maurice Cheeks & Joe Dumars at some point after all
