Joakim Noah wins Kia Defensive Player award

NEW YORK (April 21, 2014) -- Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah, the centerpiece of a defense which held opponents to a league-low 91.8 ppg, is the recipient of the 2013-14 Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award, the NBA announced today. Noah becomes the first Bulls player since Michael Jordan in 1987-88 to earn the honor.



Noah received 555 of a possible 1,125 points, including 100 first-place votes, from a panel of 125 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Indiana's Roy Hibbert (166 points, eight first-place votes) and the Los Angeles Clippers' DeAndre Jordan (121 points, eight first-place votes) finished second and third, respectively. Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote received.

Didn't expect him to win it, but to see him get as many first place votes as Hibbert is something I could've never imagined before the season started. It's a testament to the job Doc has done to transform him.

Something to build on for next year. Hopefully, it will serve to motivate DJ further towards improving even more in aiming to learn from and surpass Noah.

It's a stepping stone for him. Doc has been drilling this into DJ as a goal all season long. He's also been telling it to anyone who will listen. Some were intrigued and many laughed. At the end of the day, there were only 2 players standing in his way from reaching that goal.

Last summer was Blake's first to work on his game without rehabbing. He took strides. Hopefully this only motivates DJ to put even more work and to further develop into what he can become.

Maybe I'm just biased here, I really wanted DJ to win it and I thought he had a great chance. I'm not saying Noah isn't deserving but DJ would have gotten my vote for DPOY.

Great to see the snub did not impact his hand going in. I believe he should of won it and people gave Noah the extra credit because Rose didn't play and Deng was traded.

Noah is more experienced, fits perfectly in his team's system and is clearly a better allround player, coming of a great season during which he carried all the slack. However, looking at it from a strictly defensive standpoint, the difference should have been way smaller. As for Hibbert, he got that second spot based on past reputation alone. I don't know when those votes were cast, but it couldn't have been very recently.

DJ has to keep focused and continue improving. This is his first true breakout season, so it was almost impossible to get top honors with other bigger names in the mix.
Next year it will be a whole different story, and the best way to start building hype is with a solid playoff run.

I haven't looked at the defensive numbers but I've seen some people here say that Noah won that award with the same or similar defensive metrics he's always had and that the emergence of his offensive performance helped here.

Good for DJ to get some votes he deserves it. I get Noah but Hibbert? Hibbert has been absolute garbage, if there is a switch and hibbert is guarding anyone with any movement he is lost, the same can not be said of DJ. East coast bias strikes again, damn this late time zone.

What a huge impact Doc has made on DJ's career. People were laughing at us for giving DJ that contract. Clippers gonna clip... All it took was someone credible to believe in him. You look at Javale Magee aka Tragic Bronson who was given a similar contract, and wow.

Hopefully this is the start of something big. If he keeps improving and stays motivated, he has a good chance of winning it next year.

I've been a fan of DJ since before he was getting rotation minutes in this team, his personality and work ethic always made him a favorite of mine. But I like to try and watch things as objectively as possible, and Deandre is nowhere near the defender Hibbert is, and probably never will. Even with the Pacers big slump at the end of the season, they are several points per 100 possesions better than us on defense, and a lot of that (probably most) is in the back of the struggling Hibbert. Even with DJ's big improvement at contesting penetration at the rim, and even with Hibbert struggles, Hibbert has much better numbers in shots allowed at the rim.

DJ is improving in a lot of areas, but he still has trouble knowing where to be when the opposing team is good at moving the ball and finding the open man. We saw that on Saturday. If we manage to get to the WCF against the Spurs we'll see how much a fundamentally sound team is able to exploit DJ's weaknesses. Hibbert is not only good at blocking shots and protecting the rim, he is very good at moving his feet, positioning himself off-ball on defense and picking when to hedge and all the subtleties that make a good defender. DJ is improving, but isn't very good at that yet.

And I say that with all the affection possible and all my hopes for him to improve.

Yeah but the Pacers were 2nd in the league in defensive rebounding %, we were 26th. Now it's not as easy as either of those players being directly resposible for either of those numbers, but I'll take a team full of low number rebounders if collectivelly they put me at the top of the league. I don't accept Hibbert's 6.6 rebounds per game as him being a bad rebounder as long as his team is elite on that aspect. The Hawks are also gameplanning their offense around Hibbert's way of protecting the rim. No one game plans around DJ. And I'm fine with him corraling Curry as well, I'm not as fine with him at the top of the key while Paul and Blake defend a Curry/Lee pick'n'roll on the side. That's where he gets lost a lot.

In any case, my eye tells me Hibbert's impact is huge on the Pacers defense and that DJ still has a lot of mishaps. The numbers mostly corroborate that, so I'll trust that.

And before anyone gets defensive, I'll repeat that I love DJ more than most of you, I just think it's healthy to be critic of your team's players.

so again...Hibbert is allowed to do something worse than DJ because his overall team is better than the Clips on that side of the ball?

DeAndre rebounded better when he was on Vinny minutes.

2) What exactly is your point that the Hawks are game planning around Hibbert and other teams don't for DJ?
It's basic elementary basketball....hey, there's a big lummox clogging up the paint...put him in pick and rolls and stretch the floor out so he has to be on the perimeter.

if teams don't think it's worth it to game plan for DJ, how is that a problem to me?....i'll take his 5 blocks, altered shots and double digit rebounding performances....and his foot dexterity on the pick and roll any day of the week over having a big slow footed behemoth in the paint that can easily be taken out of the game once i spread the floor.


if we had Hibbert right now going against GSW...we'd be in trouble. wouldn't rebound. wouldn't double curry well...wouldnt be able to close out like we need.

Oh believe me, I definitely know that Magee improved. Made sure he was on every one of my fantasy teams . My point was mainly that DJ went from what some thought was a terrible contract, to a DPOY candidate, while someone who had similarities, kind of went under the radar in both criticism, and degree of improvement (through no fault of his own).
