Melo agreed to take less a long time ago, you seem to be missing that

Phil said he hopes Melo is true to his word, nothing is agreed to. ....just words.

Just like Phil it is only words so far.

Why do people think Melo is some egotistical maniac. I disagree with his was of thinking sometimes but he doesn't think of himself bigger than the Knicks. He thinks he deserves money. He's right. He's a really good player. But he's like Marbury when he first got here.

Yes he said that Dolan has been true to his word that Phil is in charge of basketball decisions.

kosmovitelli wrote:Anyway, as I've said a few times already, it's difficult to ask Melo to take a paycut at this point. Phil mentioned Tim Duncan and Lebron but Tim Duncan did it when the Spurs were already a championship caliber team and they already had Parker and Ginobili. Despite taking a paycut, Duncan was still the highest paid player on the Spurs roster. Lebron did it in order to play with Wade and Bosh. Melo knows Amare and Tyson will likely remain on the roster next year and they'll be gone in 2015. What kind of sacrifice can you ask at this point ? If the Knicks were under the cap and could sign both Rondo and Marc Gasol then you could ask Melo to take less money in order to make room for those players, you'd know exactly how much money you need Melo to leave on the table in order to assemble a winning team. At this point, both Phil Jackson and Melo are in the dark. If Melo takes less money and Knicks strike out in 2015 then Melo will be screwed.

How early in a new contract could there be an opt-out clause? In the unlikely event that signing Melo to a cheaper deal doesn't result in some good signings next summer, couldn't he opt out, or at least use the threat of an eventual opt out to demand a trade?

For what it's wortj, even if Melo accepts a contract starting at $18 million then it will be almost $19.5 million in 2015 (with 7.5% raise). It's also hard to take a paycut when Amare makes $20+ million ! Also it's difficult to ask Melo to take a paycut if his future teammates in 2015 will make more money than him.

If he took around $20m, which is still a big pay-cut, he'd be making more than Amare and probably more than anybody available in 2015, except for maybe Lebron. I don't see Gasol, Parker, Rondo, etc. getting more than that. Maybe Love or Aldridge but we probably wouldn't be targeting them due to redundancy with Melo.

And it looks like ESPN is about to run with Isola's angle for the entire day. SAS promo just went on about 'Is Phil Jackson really free to make all basketball decisions?' crap.

It's like they plan this stuff in advance.

I don't think Mr. Jackson is pushing Melo out. I think he is challenging him. If he's up for this challenge, he'll be here.

Well I think the "pushing" comes into play if whether or not you think Melo responds well to this type of public challenge in the media. Usually when Melo is called out by someone in the media.. i.e. when Woody spoke about his conditioning or when Phil talked about his sticky hands he doesn't agree with what's been said.

If this kind of talk causes him to leave then we are fortunate ;)

Me personally.. a labeled "melo-hater" by the youngins  .. I don't think Melo just reads what Phil said in todays presser and is exactly thrilled with how it went down. The majority of NBA players.. I would say 95% of them don't like to be talked about in the media and 100% of them don't like to be criticized in the media... because now he has to answer questions if anyone runs into him in Aruba or the Bahamas or whatever beach he and the family are sunning at.

Wow Stephen A and Ruocco getting mad when a caller called them out for stressing over small words. Phil says that Dolan has been true to his word yet Stephen A and the other buffoon still don't believe Phil Is telling the truth. Stephen A told the caller "you're going to tell us how to do our show. Chill out bro"

When Stephen A gets called out or made look stupid he gets defensive and doesn't have a good comeback.

They should've been around when you and I first went at it, when the trade went down. You were anything but a hater.
