Why does it matter?

Let's say the girlfriend did it specifically to try and extort him for money, and she released the tape when he refused to pay her. She might go to jail, but that changes nothing about what Sterling said.

While i think sterling should be banned from the NBA, a lot of us say things in private that are not PC. Being recorded like this is a snake move.

Sterling lost the benefit of the doubt because of his past racism, and anything the girl did and whatever her reasons for releasing the tape are distractions from the actual issue in my opinion.

Again though, so what? He said it in private, but it's no longer private. I don't know why how that happened matters.

Lots of people get in **** when people find out about things they have done in private.

Sterling has to go, should have gone long ago. It's not like he's going to incur a loss either. There are no shortage of billionaires looking to buy a winning team in the LA market.

However, I'm telling you, after reading more about this mistress, she really sounds like a high end hooker who believes she's entitled to all the goodies he showered on her basically for giving him a couple of blow jobs.

I am PISSED that some moderator changed the title I had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone has known for 10 plus years that Donald Sterling is a unfit owner and STERN never lifted a finger.
This has now exploded in the media at the absolutely worst time in the middle of the play-offs and in the middle of TV negotiations.

This is a true test of Silver and how he handles the situation if he sweeps it under the rug like his predecessor or takes a stand to rid the NBA of this leach on society.

It all sounds like Medieval times these "Billionaire" owners. Sure we are run by a consortium but at least you don't have the Roman decadent angle or none that we are aware of. America is a casino society and there are lots of these cryogenically frozen viagra males and hood ornaments at a casino.

Legally, it's a bit of a minefield to get rid of an owner. You need near unanimous support of all owners, and frankly, until recently, you had a lot of older owners who had come into the league in the same generation as Sterling and likely owed him a favour or two. Now, you have a lot of new owners, in SAC, Philly, Detroit, Charlotte, New Orleans, Golden State, Lakers, OKC, MEM, WAS, BKN and soon, Milwaukee, CLE and yes, Toronto. Gund, Pollin, Davison, Heisley, Shinn, Malouf, Jerry Colangelo... a lot of the older guard have died or sold out. That will make it easier for Silver to act.

He is not the only racist owner. He was just stupid enough to keep a loose tongue.

He thinks black people are his property that he can do/ say what he pleases. Happens often. White execs with indian offshore employees, male executive with hot female employees or a rich man who brings over a foreign maid. Not condoning it or saying it is right but we shouldn't be surprised at all about his mentality especially since he is known for this.

I don't know if any of you have listened to the full recording, but I highly recommend it.

Because honestly...listening to the whole thing, I am really not sure if he's more racist or more misogynist. I mean...the way he talks to a woman who is supposedly his girlfriend is disgusting.

When I was young I was talking to my mom about dating a black girl and she said she didn't think it was a good idea because of the opinions of others and how we might get treated. I said how will opinions change if we don't let the races mingle.

Donald sterling is older than my mom. Like others of that generation he seems to be a guy who knows it's wrong to be racist(gives lots of money to the NAACP) but can't help himself.
He is bent out of shape because his gold digging girlfiend(who's half black) is sleeping around with black guys. The guys latent generational racism is coming out . But what a sick old freak. In his mind if she was screwing around with white guys it would be ok?

Or he does it for PR since it's been public knowledge for so long that he's racist.

Dagger I don't disagree with you but even with Stern if he stood up and said Sterling must go the owner would have followed if it was simply to keep the value of the assets. We both come from a similar generation and have seen massive improvements in Canadian society much less in USA.

But tolerance is a long road and there are still miles to cover.

Silver will put his stamp on the NBA by getting rid of this cancer.

Is it not possible to think that Sterling is a racist who should be reprimanded for his actions and hopefully removed from his position AND that his GF is a disgusting excuse for a human being? His offense is worse, and the only one really punishable, but we are still allowed to talk about hers. She wanted to be in the public eye, and maybe now she should have to answer some uncomfortable questions about why she chose to associate with an 80 year old known racist.

I feel like Sterling being a racist is just taken for granted, and there isn't that much to say about it. He's just so clearly in the wrong that there isn't much to discuss. After reading the thread, I see that not everyone shares that view, but I haven't seen more than a handful of posters make anything resembling a defense of Sterling.

I don't see why there's a rush to defend this woman or act like her role in this isn't worthy of discussion, unless people are suggesting the source and or medium of the message render it moot.

Then again, if the boys club collectively turned against Stern then what was he going to be able to accomplish? *Just playing devil's advocate. Situation could have been a lot more complicated than what's on the surface.

Add to that the fact that he openly has a gf while married. Plus that totally awesome snippet from court about his straying and getting sucked in limos and then thanking her for making him feel good. Not like he can claim any of this is a one-time mistake. Definitely a repeat offender in both racism and misogyny.

Look if Stern stood up went public that Sterling must go it would have tied the hands of the owners if they opposed him the value of a NBA franchise would go down.

Boys Club is something of the past in university I belonged to such a club.
Some thought it would be a great idea having a "spear chucker night party" at the time I was dating a black girl.
Told them they were a-holes a never went back.

In my opinion there are two reasons, it's a distraction from a serious issue, and she has nothing to do with the NBA so is irrelevant.

The distraction is the main concern. She is the more easily discussed and "fun" or "sexy" topic because we can start calling her a whore, gold digger etc like so many posters have. That just encourages debate on something that doesn't really matter. The more we stray from keeping the conversation on Sterling then in my opinion we are collectively dismissing the seriousness of racism. You are right, to some extent, "Sterling being a racist is just taken for granted" because of his history so let's not let it go away so easily.
