I didn't see what Melo did but if Jeremy hit the game winner why would he be mocking him?
Jeremy, James and Chandler Parsons do their bowing ritual before games. Is that racist too?
To address Melo's action specifically. If you watch the tape..you can tell that Lin is uncomfortable with Melo doing that bowing crap..he reluctantly does it because he's so caught up in the moment. Melo wasn't/isn't exactly best friends with Lin..especially at that time..probably even moreso now.
Melo did not respect Lin..if you're looking for evidence..just look at how he responded when asked about Lin's contract.
As for the bowing thing with Parsons and James..I'm pretty sure they have a lot better relationship than Lin had with Melo when he pulled that stunt. I'm not saying that makes it right..or any less offensive to Asian Americans, but it does explain how he might feel a lot more comfortable doing it with his teammates.
Here's the thing, if you're a decent human being, why would you ever do/say anything that could be deemed offensive in a public setting? Oh..because it's funny? Because you don't know any better? Ignorance is no longer an excuse for anyone.
Unless you know the person well enough that you know they won't get offended by it...you probably shouldn't be doing it.(common sense, I know..but clearly since we're discussing it..not so common) It's kinda like how certain people can get away with say the N word around black people..and it's totally fine. Example: Louis Delmas and Tony Scheffler of the Detroit Lions.
One of the most annoying things about discussing race in the US is that a lot of people are CONVINCED that there's no racism against Asians. They love to try to deflect by saying "oh it was only a joke" or "I have a friend that's asian and he totally doesn't care at all" or my personal favorite "it's not my fault if you feel offended by my words"
For some odd reason, it's completely acceptable for people to mock/make fun/offend Asians and anyone that looks like they could be Middle Eastern/South Asian without the same kind of fear of reprisal that comes with saying something about someone that's black.
The fact that I have to respond the way I do..sorta indicates that there are some people on this board that are in that camp.
Edit: Almost forgot.."You're being too sensitive"
