Coaching Continuity and Offseason Development

Post#1 » by yosemiteben » Tue Apr 29, 2014 4:07 am

Fun fact of the day:

Since the Bobcats franchise was established in 2004, there have only been three offseasons where our team has had a coach in place that coached the entire regular season before said offseason. The last time it happened was summer of 2010.

Clifford is clearly one of the best coaches this franchise has had. He articulated clear goals for his team this past offseason, and the principles he put in place in the offseason dramatically affected the team's regular season performance.

I think we have every reason to be optimistic that we will see an unprecedented level of development this offseason, both collectively as a team and individually. Clifford is much more familiar with our core now then when he came in last season and the staff is able to put together more informed training regimens.

I know a lot of us (myself included) are desperate for us to acquire talent that will push us to be more competitive with the elite EC teams, but I think we should also be aware that we are poised for some significant organic improvement this offseason.

Just a few tweaks. I agree. No need to overhaul the roster.

I am more interested in Clifford's development as a coach than I am what FA might sign.

I'm sure Clifford says a prayer every night before he goes to sleep that he might gain the basketball insight that you possess BD.

Lol, I wasn't trying to be catty. I was alluding to the fact that he stated earlier that he was keeping the schemes really basic this year, as evidenced by his set in stone rotations. I'm just curious to see how much he adapts or whether he handles in-game adjustments better next year after a full season of head coaching under his belt.

Really hoping this team develops well. I'm very optimistic in what Zeller can become as well.

What is a realistic goal? 50 wins next season?

Barkley said we seem to need a big to play beside Al to help him out inside. We never, the entire season played Biz and Al together. How would our defense have looked with Al and Biz? How would our fast breaking offense have looked with Kemba leading the break and MKG, Hendo and Biz trailing? How would we have done with MKG, Hendo, Kemba ball hawking and Biz being the final line of defense? How would Biz have looked had he been matched up against players his size or smaller at the PF spot as opposed to always being matched against bigger slightly stronger guys?

We went the whole season without JT. We treated MKG like a scrub all year. We will have CDR (I think) and we can try to get Sessions. We have a late first round pick. We were the 4th or 5th best team in the east and we didnt even reach our potential! We should be better next year. I just hope someone points out Cliff's mistakes to him cause there were alot.

I really would like to see MKG make a huge improvement overall this offseason.

The defense will always be there but it's time for him to make a significant leap in the offensive department if this team wants to make progress.

I'd really like to keep McRoberts, but I have a feeling he goes to someone who will pay him a bit more than we will be able to pay. Unless he really loves Charlotte and the players on the team and wants to stay here.

Coach Cliff is fine and doesn't need tweeking. :D
Change team as follows:

MKG and our 2014 Portland pick need to be traded for a starter at 3 Harrison Barnes?
MCBob is not a starter, let him walk on PO. Develop Zellar and start him at 4 next to Al at 5
Trade Hendo and Detroits 2015 pick to Minnesota for 2014 13th pick(Gary Harris SG) and Gorgui Deng PF/C
Draft Dwight Powell second round 2014.
Depending on JT recovery,Sign either CDR or Tolliver or both.
Sign FA Jaroyd Bayliss to backup Kemba (and or start at 2 )depending on Harris development in camp.
Convert Biz to backup PF and post up simliar to AL.
Extend Als contract and Kemba's contract.
Team
KW,Bayliss,Pargo
Harris Neal CDR(Swing 2-3)
Barnes,JT,Tolliver(Swing3-4)
Zellar, Dwight Powell, Biz ,(Swing 4-5)

I think the key to it is the ref helping hold the trophy. Showing it is easier to win 8 vs 5.

You guys surprised a lot of people, I knew Charlotte would be a good team. To top that off, you guys just about shed the nickname LOLCats. The biggest upgrades you need are SG and PF which you guys pretty much knew.

Oh, well in that case I'm the ****

Totally agree, it'll be very interesting to see these wrinkles and added complexities in his schemes.

i am definitely interested to see what new schemes clifford adds to our defense. on offense he needs to put in a little more variety and make us less dependent on jefferson.

biz, zeller and mkg all need to show some level of offensive improvement by next season. none of them can afford a stagnant offseason.

zeller - get stronger, work on that mid-range jumper, get a go-to post move
biz - improve hand-eye coordination, work on mid-range jumper, the form is there, just needs reps and confidence
mkg - work on shooting, dribbling and finishing with left hand, develop at least one in-between move - floater, runner, jump hook etc... also could add a few more lbs of muscle in the upper body

try to get jefferson to drop about 10-15 lbs.

definitely resign mcroberts and cdr
possibly resign tolliver

find a backup pg, either bring sessions back, sign a solid vet backup or draft a pg at 24.

last but not least, find a way to upgrade the shooting guard position.

pg: kemba | (free agent or rookie)
sg: (free agent or trade) | neal | cdr
sf: mkg | taylor? (free agent or rookie) | tolliver
pf: mcroberts | zeller | (free agent or rookie)
c: jefferson | biz | (free agent or rookie)

thats 5 spots to fill (one of which could be filled by the return of taylor assuming he is 100% healthy
1. starting sg
2. backup pg
3. backup sf
4. 3rd string pf
5. 3rd string c

I really hope MKG progresses as a shooter, 35% on midrange next season would be huge
