Simply proud of the Bobcats play this year? Post Here

Post#1 » by DY_nasty » Tue Apr 29, 2014 3:45 pm

I didn't expect much at all from the Bobcats in the post season. We were easily overmatched from the jump and after Al's injury, I think most looking on expected a collapse across the board.

This team has a lot of heart. And not just that, they played hard - and most of all smart - despite having the odds stacked against them in the worst way. It would've been all too easy for guys to start pointing fingers, tuning out coaches, thinking about next year, and taking games off in this series but every single player on the roster showed how far the franchise has come by not just being professionals but having each others backs the whole time. If someone would've told me that the Charlotte Bobcats would be up 2 at half-time against the defending champs without Al Jefferson in an elimination game two months ago, I would've asked for them to pass me whatever they were smoking.

The team exceeded all of my expectations this year. By a lot. MKG showed immense patience and determination by working on limited minutes and playing through harsh, harsh criticisms all year long. Kemba did his absolute best to not fall back into old habits even when it would've been successful in the short term - his long term commitment to being a true point guard has to be respected. Al Jefferson had a career year on and off the court. Henderson did his best to fill shoes that he knows he'll never being able to wear. Jeff Taylor by all accounts has not let this injury keep him down and he's been working out nonstop AND sticking with the team on the road when he may not have done so if he were in his rookie mindstate. Biyombo again improves through the rough uphill climb that is being a young international big in the NBA. Zeller improved every month and the playoff experience against some of the grittiest bigs in the league will no doubt help him.

I know I'm forgetting guys, but I think everyone can look at someone on the roster and say something about how each player exceeded expectations in some shape or form.

Most of all, this coaching staff. I would've never imagined Steve Clifford pushing an up and down game in game 4 but his willingness to adapt on the spot blew my mind as it makes it clear that Clifford wasn't simply trying to enforce his system for the duration of the regular season, but a system that our guys could learn and create a foundation through. I was amazed when I saw Clifford's change ups in game 4. But he's been great all year and helped guys get better as players - not just get better for him.

And MJ. He wasn't even a dick this year!

This has been the best season I could've realistically hoped for this year as a Bobcats fan and I'm just truly thankful to all of the organization (Dell, Steve, and Steph are the best crew in the league for a local fan) for what they've done. We're in a great spot going forward and getting to that spot this season has been a blast.

I agree Dy, game 4 cemented Clifford's place as the future of this franchise. I was annoyed all season long by his rotations and the amount of touches we gave Jefferson, but it's clear to me now that all of those decisions are part of a longer-term plan. That said I still worry about how we're going to develop Biyombo, MKG, and Zeller. We've never proven that we're able to consistently help players improve their games, but this staff has earned the benefit of the doubt for now. Their ability to develop those 3 will determine how good we will ultimately become, but for the first time since the original Hornets left town I am now confident that decent basketball is here to stay as long as Clifford is our coach.

Also, say what you will about the guys Cho has drafted, but they all bust their tails on the floor and want to win above all else. They are easy to root for and I for one am looking forward to doing so in the seasons to come. Go Hornets!

Am I simply proud? No, I am flat out amazed.

I expected this to be a bottom ten defensive team. We had a convincing finish to the season, and I think a lot of people agree that we may very well have been the second or third best team in the eastern conference bracket with a healthy Jefferson. We played extremely good basketball from February onwards that leaves me incredibly excited moving on with the Hornets era. With a core of Al, Kemba, MKG, and a number of great supporting pieces, we're just a piece away from being a real threat in the Eastern Conference. We're a Lance Stephenson away from being a perennial middle-of-the-pack playoff team, and we've got a potential top 10 pick coming our way from Detroit. Assuming we can keep the pieces together and continue to grow, this is a young team with a chance to be special. We don't have a conventional #1 scoring threat like most of the top teams do, but we're probably looking at being a team like Indiana or Memphis (or even San Antonio) that typically plays great team basketball rather than relying on a Lebron, or a Durant. I can't wait for next season.

I'm a Knicks fan but observing the transformation that the Bobcats displayed this season was an awesome distraction from my own teams woes lol.

Can't wait to see how the Hornets perform next season - they are no longer the under-dogs and will be held to higher expectations from the fans and the league.

I'm so proud of the Bobcats/Hornets for what was an awesome season. It was fun to be able to go to games and keep track of it.

Rick Bonnell's player-by-player look at the roster

Bismack Biyombo: Played better defensively than the previous season, but he’s still very limited offensively and might always be so.

Chris Douglas-Roberts: For a guy who wasn’t even in the NBA, he made a strong contribution. Solid as both a defender and a scorer. Wants to re-sign here.

Brendan Haywood: A stress fracture in his left foot cost him the entire season. A lot of mileage on that body.

Gerald Henderson: He did not have a particularly good playoff series. His limited shooting range makes it a challenge to play him and small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist together.

Al Jefferson: Signing him was probably the best roster move in franchise history, giving the Bobcats the low-post scorer they desperately needed to uplift a franchise that went 28-120 the previous two seasons.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist: He’s a well above-average defender and a well below-average jump shooter. This summer needs to be about breaking down that jump shot and reassembling.

Josh McRoberts: His passing, shooting and defense made him an important “connector” on this team. He wants to be back, but probably expects a nice raise.

Gary Neal: He added much-needed outside shooting in a mid-season trade. His performances in the playoff series against Miami were uneven.

Jannero Pargo: A decent long-range shooter who knew upfront he’d be the team’s third point guard.

Luke Ridnour: He wasn’t as impactful a backup point guard as his predecessor, Ramon Sessions. This position needs to be addressed.

Jeff Taylor: He’s recovering well from a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered in December. Should be ready to play well before start of training camp in October.

Anthony Tolliver: Somewhat limited athletically, but his 41.6 percent shooting from 3-point range was a definite benefit.

Kemba Walker: Improved this season as a defender and passer/decision-maker. He needs to be a better shooter (40 percent from the field and 33 percent from 3-point range).

D.J. White: Was signed late in the season to mostly be a practice player/emergency big man off the bench.

Cody Zeller: After a slow start Zeller appeared to improve dramatically the last two months of the season. He needs to get stronger to hold his ground against older NBA big men.

can't argue with any of that, at least he didn't protect his boys or slip the knife into his usual targets.

thats some rather vanilla analysis from rick. one of these days he will write an article for the real fans, not the fringe fans who watch 5 games a year.
