I heard Mike Mayock on with Joe and Evan on the FAN this morning saying that he thinks the Jets should go with a CB with the 18th pick because this draft is so deep with receivers.

The top 2 CB's (Dennard, Gilbert) may both be gone by 18. The next crop of CB's arguably would not be at the same level as the next crop of WR's after the top 2 WR's (Watkins, Evans) are gone. I don't know that reaching on a CB cause you need one makes more sense then picking a WR or TE that are projected to be right around your draft slot simply because there are more WR's or TE's is necessarily the best option. If Dennard is still on the board at 18, then sure absolutely.

What I would like to see is the Jets try to consolidate picks and maybe either move up or get another 1st (slightly higher than 18) by trading multiple lower round picks. They have 12 draft picks. It's unrealistic to expect that they would be able to keep and use all 12 (and have all 12 make the roster). Would love to see Idzik trade multiple picks for another 1st round pick maybe a little higher than 18 to get Dennard the CB and then use 18 to draft a WR.

I would prefer Brandin Cooks over Beckham Jr or Marquise Lee. Cooks can create yards after the catch better than anyone in the draft and he's explosive in the open field. He also runs the ball (averaged something like 6.5yards per carry as a runner) and is an extremely dangerous returner (see ability to create yards with the ball in his hands by avoiding tackles along with 4.3 speed). Tough (never missed a game) and physical. Having QB's that can run will force opposing secondary to focus on them and allow Cooks even more room to create and gain extra yards. If Ryan wants an "attack offense" (what we've been hearing for years) then Cooks is an attack type receiver that will put pressure on opposing secondaries to chase down and cover.

That's what Mayock was saying.

Oh is the NFL draft tonight? Haven't seen anything in regards to that on SportsCenter these past couple of months.

Yeah I was doing some research on this aspect of his games and it was something like 1,400 yards AFTER the catch for his college career. Some crazy number. There's a lot of highlight real videos of him and if you just watch the parts of the clips AFTER he catches the ball and didn't realize he was a WR, you'd swear he was a top RB prospect.

Selfish haha.

I just wanna see him go as high as possible because he went to Vandy. I'd love to see him in NY (Jets or Giants) because I think he's gonna be a nice 2nd/3rd receiver - strong receiver, good speed, and reliable hands. Zac Stacy had a nice rookie season and I'd like to see Matthews to make an impact, too. We've got an OT and a S in the draft too, but I don't know that much about them.

mike mayocks guess is as good as anyone. I remember when the eagles drafted maclin and mayock didn't even mention him. Mayock went something like "i can't believe i didn't think about that one"

Jets fan...here's my thinking,

I'd take Denard or Ebron over any WR that stands to make it to 18. I think CB is an even bigger need than WR after our schedule came out. After those two, I'd take Beckham and be pretty happy with it. If those three are gone, I'd look to trade down and see if someone is hype enough about free falling QB's to give up some value to slide into the 18th pick.

I don't want to over spend moving up in a draft with this much depth but I would like another premium pick (probably a second or third).

If we don't get Dennard, I'd hope Roby drops and take a shot at him. I'd also hope for some O-line depth and LB depth added with our glut of picks in the later rounds.

I think Cooks is an Eagle if they look for an offensive guy. He's going to drop a little and they need a replacement for a top 5 receiver who happens to play like Cooks but faster and less physical. Remember the Maclin pick, they aren't afraid to take a shot for someone they like (and he's played Kelly a few times).

Odell Beckham would be perfect for the Jets imo. He reminds me of Reggie Wayne (I'm an LSU fan though).

moocow007 wrote:Clowney should be the first guy taken. 6'5" near 270lb physical freak sack machine DE's that can explode into the backfield don't fall.

Remember Khalil Mack is 6-3 250 and has the all time TFL record for the NCAA. He's also proven at both end spots, and all LB spots. I still think Clowney is the best but not by a major distance.

I'm hoping the Jets aren't afraid either. The Jets having been the only team (or one of the only teams) to bring Cooks in is interesting. But yeah Mack is great as well and should go top 3-5.

The Jets need to get a defender. You can find WRs late but Calvin Pace needs to be replaced immediately. Decker and Curley are fine enough where they are but the linebackers on the Jets are trash.

Meanwhile the only "bad" part in the Eagles lineup is their backup receivers. I'd want Barr if I was NY anyway. If he falls out the top ten they have to snatch him up.

Im not sold on Brandin Cooks. He would just be a slot guy, which we already have Kerley for. Sure Cooks is explosive but we need a WR to fit our role playing alongside Decker. Cooks' style is more suited for the Eagles, not the Jets.

I'll be satisfied if the Giants draft either 1 of the 4 players. (Lewan, Martin, Donald or Ebron.)

Ebron is all over the map in mocks. Some mocks even have us passing on him to draft guys like Cooks and Lee which I can't picture. So it's not a foregone conclusion he'll be gone, he's just like a lot of other top prospects in this draft...he could go top ten or could drop out of the top 20 under the right circumstances.

I just read a Jet piece that said if they want Beckham Jr. they'll have to trade up past the G-Men because the Giants are enamored with him...hadn't heard that leading into the draft and can't picture them reaching for Beckham but it'd make me kinda happy because I think it means passing up on better prospects which gives the Jets a better chance at landing someone great. Then again, I can't picture the Giants picking Beckham at 12 or the Jets trading up all the way to 11 or higher just to land him.
