Heat vs Brooklyn Game 2: Rashard out, Jones in
Got a source telling me James Jones will be coming off the bench for Rashard, not sure if Shard will still get minutes but Jones will surely get the majority of them. I'm sure some of you will be happy since I hear so many people calling for Rashard's head.
Don't want to copy Spo on this but it's true Rashard makes the offense run smoothly, he passes well for a big guy and always keeps the ball moving.
With that said, I'll take James Jones 3 point ability over what Rashard has brought to the table this year any day. Just wanted you guys to realize why Rashard gets mintues.

I seriously believe that someone in the Heat organization was reading the forums, saw what we thought about Lewis, and decided to leak this information to your source knowing that it would reach RealGM. He's probably getting a good laugh out of this and this is just the appetizer. The main course will be our reactions when Spo subs in Lewis.coachsanders wrote:Got a source telling me James Jones will be coming off the bench for Rashard, not sure if Shard will still get minutes but Jones will surely get the majority of them. Come to think of it, it was probably Spo himself who leaked it to your source.

James Jones and Why He Needs to Play
Preface: this is not reactionary. I have been saying this since April. But it was particularly glaring tonight. James Jones needs to play.
Our entire team model is based on hitting 3s. We play small ball. That is our identity. We don't rebound. Our interior defense isn't particularly good. Our only post scorers are perimeter players. When teams collapse the paint on us, our only option is to hit over the top. We can't simply grind out wins with our defense because our defense just isn't good enough. It's too small, too frantic, too weak on the glass.
If we can't hit 3s, we can't beat anyone. Thankfully, this is a rare occurrence. Chalmers, LeBron, Ray Allen, and Shane Battier have all hit 40% or greater from 3 in at least one of the past two seasons. Unfortunately, Battier is just about done. This leaves us relying heavily on Chalmers and Allen for floor spacing. Chalmers is, as we all know, a shaky proposition. Allen, like all mortals, has off games.
That yields games like tonight. Excluding James Jones' garbage time 3s, we were 5-21 from beyond the arc. That is just under 24%. That is a loss. We are 8-11 this season when shooting under 30% from 3, and most of those wins came against cellar dwellers. When we're not hitting from outside, we absolutely must get James Jones and Ray Allen in the game until we make teams respect the outside shot. Until that happens, LeBron and Wade can't get into the paint, and we turn into a chucking team.
Rashard Lewis is a large part of the problem. As a role player on the Heat, you need to hit 3s. That is why Udonis really can't play for us in most match-ups. Norris Cole doesn't do it exceptionally well, but he's passable because he plays good defense and has generally been fairly efficient from 3 in the playoffs. Rashard Lewis is now 2-12 from 3 in the playoffs. That is 17%. He is 6 for 19 from the field overall. That is 31.5%.
I don't want to overstate this. We have been great so far in the playoffs. That is, in large part, because we have been hitting 3s. We've been above 37% from 3 in every playoff game except this one. When we're hitting 3s, Rashard vs. Jones doesn't really matter. But when we're not, Rashard is a liability. Jones needs to be utilized in those situations.

Completely agreed. Not overreacting to this game whatsoever, but James Jones needs to take Lewis' minutes.

Well we should focus in on not letting a team shoot 60% from 3 & chasing Mirza Teletovic off the 3 point line more than JJ playing. Lewis played good in G2 but he wasn't the answer tonight off the bench but let's not act like this game was lost on Lewis playing over JJ & Lewis being a liability...Just saying

Re: James Jones and Why He Needs to Play
As I would love JJ to get Lewis's minutes I must agree this may have gotten out of hand. There are more issues this team has to take care of, especially defensively.
I would want to know Spo's reasoning as to burying JJ on the bench after seeing he had a great Bobcats series and just playing Lewis out of nowhere. I notice Spo likes to give people chances and then changes things up as we're losing, and thats what he did. Though if after JJ's display tonight and he still doesn't play, I don't know what to say to Spo lol
Our role players did not show up tonight and theirs did, that was the bottom line tonight. FIFTEEN threes were given up and we played no defense. Crap happens.

Re: James Jones and Why He Needs to Play
They shot extremely well from 3. They may have won regardless. But this game was broken open in the third quarter, when we scored 14 points and shot 1-8 from 3.
If James Jones is in the game and we go, say, 3-8 from 3, that is a 6-point swing. We're down 7 going into the 4th, instead of down 13. Maybe they don't shoot so freely when the lead isn't so safe. Maybe they do. Who knows? What I do know with absolute certainty is that we're not beating anyone in the playoffs when we shoot under 30% from 3. So we should do everything within our power to ensure that doesn't happen. That involves playing James Jones.

Re: James Jones and Why He Needs to Play
JJ needs to play but I am worried about him on d vs Johnson or Pierce. They'll go at him every time and we'll cheat causing breakdowns. I don't know if we can afford to have both him and Ray out there at the same time on d but on offense that's a deadly combo

Lol! Spo saw that one steal Lewis created and though "Defensive player of the year right there"
Lewis is Spo's new best friend! Spo had Joel, Chris Quinn, Mike Bibby and now he as Lewis! Every stat and eye ball in the world can see he is by far the worst player on either team with better options on the bench but Lewis still plays. First we said he plays because Beasley D is bad. Then we said it was because James Jones D. Then it was said for spacing. And now he is a passing big! I may go over board on my hate but when I dislike you this much, it's always because your not an NBA player or shouldn't be getting minutes; Joel, Quinn, Malik, Anthony Carter and now Rashard Lewis! Plz Lew do us all a favor and catch the flu! Get a ring and enjoy the ride but please stop stepping on the court

Re: James Jones and Why He Needs to Play
the only games we looked good this year if when we got everyone involved on offense including the bench and role players. JJ, Lewis, Anderson, Douglas it doesnt really matter. When we clam up and only go through Bron Wade we just dont play well as a team and get the separation we need over other teams. Tonight its like all the other players were only allowed to spot up for 3's thats just a terrible gameplan. We tighten up and bottleneck our own offense for no logical reason.
1. Herro 2. Bol Bol 3. Seko 4. Bruno
unless we trade up for Barrett or trade down for PJ Washington

I think a lot of that has to do with our outside shooting. It's a little bit of the chicken or the egg, but it seems to me to have more to do with our outside shooters and less to do with bad decision-making. Although, of course, it's never all-or-nothing in either respect.
Tonight, LeBron and Wade both did more pounding than they had to. But based only on my own observation, it seemed like the Nets were sticking with Allen and sagging drastically on everyone else. They were playing way off LeBron and Chalmers, and basically giving Wade the Rondo treatment. We survived the first half because LeBron got hot. Once he cooled down, the wheels came off. They packed the paint and we couldn't hit from over the top to loosen them up. We chucked eight 3s in the third quarter and only made one of them.
Once we start hitting 3s, they have to stick to the outside shooters, which allows LeBron and Wade to create off the dribble, which forces the defense to scramble and lets us move the ball and get everyone involved, taking advantage of defenders that are out of position or sprinting to close out. Our offense is pretty much unstoppable when we're hitting from outside. There's just no way to stick with three shooters at the arc while keeping LeBron and Wade out of the lane. But it's all predicated on our ability to hit from outside.

Re: James Jones and Why He Needs to Play
reactionary.
We need the non-big 3 players to hit 3's.
JJ is not a defender so he is the last in line to be called up. He is possibly the best cold 3pter in the league though and he needs to be brought in earlier in Battier, Chalmers and Allen are not hitting 3's.
Wade needs to attack the basket more as he is no threat from 3.
