Everyone would prefer to have a GM in place right now AND have that GM conducting the coaching search & oversee the draft.
But reality is we don't have a GM.
People whine about Gores not being a "basketball" guy...then whine about him hiring a head hunting firm to look for candidates! You can't have it both ways!
Who Gores hires as GM is the single most important decision he'll make this off-season and the single most important decision he'll make in the next 5 years (at least as far as the Pistons are concerned)!
I'd rather they take their time and get it right than hire someone just so fan boys have a figurehead to look to 5-6 weeks before the Draft...a Draft in which we might not even have a first round pick

I can agree with most of what you're saying (especially the committee selection)... OTOH, where do you draw the line of due diligence vs. losing opportunities?... the Pistons got a jump on most teams... they were likely looking at candidates well b4 the JD firing.... a rough analogy would be shopping for the perfect price on ebay and eventually losing the best deal...
Qualified candidates will be scooped up quickly... then our new committee will have to fight the "best market" and playoff contender teams... it's like saying all volunteers please take one step forward... then the candidates all take one step back.... let's hope there is not going to be paralysis by analysis and they understand there are new players in the game that won't wait 2 months.
