Bears select Ego Ferguson 2nd round #51 overall

6'3" 315 lbs

NFL.com ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS Good size, foot speed, balance and athletic ability. Flashes the ability to stack, locate and shed. Bends his knees, redirects efficiently and has good range for a 300-pounder -- flows well laterally. Nice closing speed. Had disruptive potential.

WEAKNESSES Needs to get stronger through his core and base. Needs to quicken his hands and use them more violently. Raw counters and pass-rush moves. Power element is missing. Spends too much time idled at the line of scrimmage. Does not dominate single blocks and gets beat up by double teams. Limited two-gap ability. Disappears for long stretches. Only a one-year starter with minimal behind-the-line production.

DRAFT PROJECTION Rounds 2-3

BOTTOM LINE Athletic, raw, developmental three-technique with clear upside, though he is inexperienced, aimless and unrefined at this stage of his development. Needs more glass in his diet and simply does not impact games the way he should. Is likely to test well and be drafted higher than his performance dictates in the hopes a defensive line coach can tap into his potential.

He's dominate player in college but what is the success rate for LSU DT's. I'd say its not that high, If he can translate to the NFL then I think this is a very solid pick.

WHY?
Even if you like him he's probably still in 3rd

Let's hope he's a defensive Kyle Long. :P

Probably, but better player's available. Or why not trade down seeing as he likely would have been available in the 3rd? Maybe could have gotten another 3rd rounder or something out of it?

Hopefully he pans out, but it's still a confusing guy to take.

They only concern I have is that a lot of previous LSU DTs have been less then successful. If you don't think that he was a product of the system then he's without a doubt a second round talent.

If you do think his success was because he had a lot of talent surrounding him on the line at LSU, he'll have the same here. Houston/Ego/Theo/Allen plus all the depth we've added.

From what he's shown in college, there's no reason to have too much concern.

Walterfootball had him as the 5th ranked DT and said he received a 2nd round grade.

Ego Ferguson*, DT, LSU
Height: 6-3. Weight: 315.
Projected 40 Time: 5.00.
Projected Round (2014): 2-3.
5/5/14: The speedy and athletic Ferguson was impressive in 2013, especially early in the season. He recorded 58 tackles with 3.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. Ferguson can be disruptive at the point of attack and use his speed to cause a lot of havoc behind the line of scrimmage. The redshirt junior started out hot, but cooled off. He had seven tackles against Alabama.

Ferguson decided to enter the 2014 NFL Draft, but would have had a better shot at the first round by returning to school. Sources have told WalterFootball.com that Ferguson received a second-round grade.

Ferguson was a backup in 2012 and totaled 14 tackles. He was a backup as redshirt freshman backup in 2011, too, notching 13 tackles.

Personal: Majoring in sports administration. Son of Ego and Brenda Ferguson.

whether or not he has value in the second, I am glad we have a GM who drafts for upside finally, instead of floor like Angelo used to try doing and failed. Anyway, I'll pray for Darnell Dockett

This made me not like this pick very much considering where Emery took him. He seems to have a lot of flaws for a 2nd round pick.

Yea, its a terrible video. It didn't really show any highlights at all but it was something and it was the only video I could find over 1 minute.

Emery intends to coach him up. The guy is swinging hard for the fences here. Especially since they can wait a year for him

I don't think we're done taking dlinemen today. I think we go another DT in the 3rd if there's one worth taking.

Well we did get a new Dline coach right? Let's see what he can do.
