I happen to be a little more okay, apparently, with Hendo's presence on this roster than most on this board. His athleticism and tenacity bring something to the team. I wish he were a more consistent shooter, though his percentages aren't horrible (35% from 3 is better than I expected from the eye test). And he does make a lot more bone-headed plays than I would expect from a player I thought would be high BBIQ.
However, a lot on this board want him gone, and I would not object if we could find a good replacement.
What I found in firing up the Trade Machine is that there are no longer many contracts in the $6 Mln range. I won't be the first to point out many teams are paying big bucks for stars then a million to a bunch of role players to fill the roster. A cursory look led me to feel that many would-be Hendo replacements are equally flawed.
Still, I tried to fashion some Hendo trades. Here are some, with comments:
Hendo + POR pick for Kyle Korver.
Korver is just the 3 pt specialist the Alfense demands, and he showed no drop off in quality, despite being 33 years old this year. So, why would ATL trade him? Well, because he is 33. Korver's contract is a match at $6.7/ but he's got 3 more years, meaning he will be 36 at contract's end. When his game starts to diminish it's going to go fast. They would get a younger SG in return + the POR pick, two players in line with what appears to be more of a youth movement in ATL. CHA gets a terrific shooter entering the stage of career where the next injury could hasten the end.
Hendo to CLE for Jarrett Jack
Jack didn't work out this year in CLE. It doesn't look like he's a good fit behind Kyrie Irving. And CHA would not be getting a SG in return for Hendo. But we have CDR and Neal at SG now, and most fans calling for the team to draft a young shooter, such as PJ Hairston, at 24. Yet PG is a desperate need. Ridnour should be out the door based on his play here. Enter Jack, a combo guard, scorer, with good size for the position who could back up Kemba and play alongside him, much in the same manner that Ramon did (well, hopefully with some more passes thrown in). Jack, at $6.3 for 3 more years, is a match contract wise, and at 33 by contract end should not turn into lost money.
Hendo + Gary Neal to OKC for Perkins & Jeremy Lamb. Okay, half the board (at least) wants Lamb, so I tried to look at a way to get him here. Kendrick Perkins is at $8.7 MLN for another year, Lamb $2 MLN for 2. Perk looks as creaky as a wooden bridge. Hendo and Neal give them what they give us, tenacity and athleticism from Hendo and shooting from Neal. If they lose to LA I could see them feeling the need to bring in new blood. Still, Perk will be expiring, and Brooks seems irrationally attached to him, not sure they do this one.
Hendo + Neal + Taylor for Eric Gordon.
NO tried to bring in a bunch of guys that would be hard to guard. Problem is those guys don't want to share the ball. Add in Gordon's injuries and his $14 MLn contract for 2 more yrs and he is a bad fit in NO. But Gordon's style of play - knock down shooter playing off Kemba and Al - fits CHA much better. The contract is crazy, really, but CHA has the cap room. If Gordon can return to his pre-NO ways - he's younger, 25, than Hendo, so making that bet isn't far-fetched - replacing Hendo, Neal and Taylor with Gordon works.
Hendo to DEN for Darrel Arthur and Evan Fournier
Arthur had a bad year, such that it seems DEN would be happy to be rid of him. The price? Fournier. This kid can really shoot, and at 21, strikes me as the kind of player the Spurs scoop up. Get him before he breaks out.
Hendo to LAC for Jared Dudley and Reggie Bullock
Dudley had a bad year. He's a flow kind of guy. He's not going to get the minutes he needs to play well in LA. Bullock looks to me like a good prospect, but he's buried behind their plethora of shooters. C'mon LA, give it up. You need Hendo - Doc River's kind of glue guy, you don't need a kid shooter like Reggie.
Poo-Poo Platter Ideas:
Hendo to PHI for Thad Young ($8.8 M x 2)
Hendo to PHI for Jason Richardson ($6.2 player option)
Hendo to TOR for Steve Novak + Dwight Buycks
Hendo to WAS for Martell Webster ($5 M x 3)
Hendo to WAS for Andre Miller ($5 M x 1)
Hendo to SAC for Carl Landry ($6.5 x 3)
Hendo to SAC for Jason Thompson ($5.6 for 3)
Hendo to HOU for Jeremy Lin or Omer Asik (both on $8 Mln contracts that balloon to $15M)
The point of that list I just rattled off as Poo-Poo Platter Ideas: You can see that trading Hendo is not easy. Many of the players for whom he might be dealt have major warts. Trades that make sense to a CHA fan, such as Hendo to DEN for Wilson Chandler, or ORL for Afflallo, make you ask, why would that team do that (they wouldn't).
