Actually sometimes I wonder why a player would attend the combine if they're already a lock to be top 5 or so.

From Parker and Embiid's perspectives, you're pretty much guaranteed to be top 4. What you have to gain is seemingly far outweighed by what you could lose.

That's exactly it. I'd be more surprised if Parker actually did attend. I'm guessing he isn't gonna test out all that favorably. You're already considered a top 3-4 pick. You really have nothing to gain.

It all depends. If Parker showed up in great shape and flashed a monster vertical and his size measured nicely then he could potentially move up. Obviously it could go the other way too though where he's pudgy and looks average athletically. Same with embiid, though for him it's not being pudgy and unathletic, but simply his back is still hurt.

Either way, when guys don't compete there is sort of a red flag that goes up just because it raises questions. Is a guy out of shape? Is he hurt?

That's all I think.

Great, these guys are top 4 picks. Dropping from 1 to 4 is losing you a ton of money and I'd say when you are in that top 10, especially top 5, category a surprising combine would help you a lot more often then it hurts you.

I'm sure Jabari has done all the drills privately already. If he knows he isn't gonna put up good/great numbers, wouldn't it be smart on his part to not attend?

If that's the common line of thought, then wouldn't it make every guy who doesn't attend the combine drop?

Huh? That's opposite of what I'm saying. I'm saying he's already a lock to go top 3-4. If he knows he's not gonna test well, why show up?

I'm saying if every person out there is thinking what you are, "lock to go top 4, the test results won't be good so why go" wouldn't that eventually lead to it be assumed that every guy who doesn't go has something to hide?

Nothing earth shattering here, but Chad Ford and Kevin Pelton had a little discussion on Parker (insider required)

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2014/story/_/id/10904761/projecting-jabari-parker-nba-nba-draft

OK, forget about team needs. You have the No. 1 pick. Parker or Wiggins?

Pelton: I've been torn on this question all season. Statistically, Parker is the choice. His WARP projection (2.6, third among likely draft prospects) is much better than Wiggins' (1.5). Yet I think that Wiggins' ceiling is much higher because with development he can overcome his weaknesses on offense, whereas I don't think Parker has the physical tools to be anything better than average defensively. If I had to make the choice today, I'd go with Parker. But if I were really in that spot, my decision would probably come down to workouts, interviews and everything that will transpire between now and the draft.

Ford: I think I'm less torn. I love Parker and think he'll be the leading candidate to be Rookie of the Year. But I think Wiggins offers so much upside at both ends of the court. He needs to polish some of the skills that Parker has already mastered, but Wiggins can do things on the court that Parker will never be able to do because of size and athletic ability for his position. If you are asking who will be the best player the next two years in the NBA, I'd probably go Parker. But if you are asking who will be the best player in five? I think it will be Wiggins.

Odd that the premise is Parker or Wiggins with the number 1 pick when Embiid is the best prospect of the three. I get that it's more of an apples to apples comparison because both are wing-ish players who have been connected for several years now, but still.

It's a matter of opinion. You think embiid is clearly the best prospect. However there are plenty of other people who don't share that belief at all.

I don't see any reason why the top 3 should attend the combine. In Parker's case specifically, why go if you believe that you're going to be the number one overall pick? Nothing to gain. Both Wiggins and Embiid should have that attitude as well. If I'm representing them, no way would I risk sending them to a meaningless combine. You could have a GREAT combine and a team could not take you number one if they feel someone's upside is better.

Boo hoo you have to spend a day out of your life before making millions of dollars to give NBA teams a better look at you. Go there and just get measured out, people refuse to do certain parts of it all the time. There is no point to not go at all. Show up fat, show up injured, just go. Hell, Anthony Bennett showed up as both and got drafted #1. To me it's like refusing a workout. You aren't Michael Jordan, you aren't better then the combine.

All 3 not wanting to show up to Chicago obviously means they don't want to play for Milwaukee. DO NOT WANT. Our only hope is Randle or Smart want to play for us or we trade the pick for Josh Smith.

Sheesh, Wiggins. Are you that nervous about your handle and/or jumper that you'll pass up the chance to post a 58" vertical?

Return to Milwaukee Bucks
