Pistons Hire SVG

Post#1 » by Q00 » Tue May 13, 2014 4:41 pm

The Detroit Pistons are pursuing Stan Van Gundy with a lucrative offer to assume complete control of basketball operations and coach, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Pistons are trying to compete with the Golden State Warriors, who are aggressively pursuing Van Gundy for their coaching position.

Van Gundy has expressed a strong interest in the Warriors' opening, but it's immediately unclear how intrigued he is with the pursuit of Pistons owner Tom Gores.

The Pistons have a far less appealing roster, but the chance to build his own organization is a challenge that the Warriors can't offer him.

Van Gundy, 54, has a .641 winning percentage as a head coach in stops with Miami and Orlando. Van Gundy reached the NBA Finals with the Magic in 2009.

If he doesn't take it then I bet Izzo does. I think it's clear the direction Gores is going, hire a big time coach and give him the keys over basketball operations while Gores has one of his guys run the business side.

Wow.

Heard it on the radio. Was posting the topic 10 minutes ago but figured I'd wait until someone with a link posted it. What took you so long? Lol

Anyway I'm not a big Stan Van guy, I love Jeff. But this does make me feel better than the Josh Smith Facebook thread where apparently he's staying.

There's also this from Mannix

It sounds like it will come down to Stan's preference to contend right away as just coach, or be able to build his own team as coach and GM.

AWESOME!

I wrote this like 4 hours ago in the coach searching thread. :D

That being said I want SvG if they really focus the coaching hire first. He can get some roster responsibilities too for my liking and hire "his" GM. I just think he did a great job in Orlando before Dwight Howard turned into a whiny b**tch. He took that team to the finals with limited talent. They failed to surround Dwight with that 2nd star but thats not his fault, he got the maximum out of his players.

This is aggressive -- I love it. I wouldn't give just anyone this kind of control, but someone like SVG has a hell of a track record and could be lured in by this level of control after the Dwight fiasco basically pushed him out of Orlando.

This could be one of the best things happened to the Pistons in the last 5 years with Drummond.

True, and if that is what they are doing, I'm all for it. Looking at the potential GM candidates, I don't see where any of them are more intriguing or even more qualified than Stan to run a team.

So if giving that power to the coach instead enables us to get a top coach here, I'm all for it. I think getting the coach right is the most important part.

I feel like Stan would be a great hire for you guys and I'd really be looking forward to how much he can help Drummond. Either way, best of luck to you guys.

I think it's the only way we are landing someone in SVG or Izzo's class. Those guys aren't coming to a team that's not a contender yet and answering to an inexperienced GM.

Kind of wondering if SVG's camp leaked this to help improve their negotiating position with the Warrior's. I can't really see what the Pistons would have to gain by feeding this information to Woj, especially given how quiet they've been about the process thus far.

Yahoo Sources: Detroit's pursuing Stan Van Gundy to oversee basketball operations and coach. http://yhoo.it/1ooLPCv

And... that could explain the Warriors' slow-down on Stan Van Gundy. Obviously.

Tim Kawakami ‏@timkawakami 3m
NBA source: Stan Van Gundy told the Warriors he wanted total control of basketball decisions. They declined. He could get that in DET.

Basically, would be replacing Myers and also Lacob can't over rule. Not happening. RT @jkamin73 what does that mean, "basketball decisions"?

Awesome! It sounds like this may actually be happening, if he wants personnel control and GS won't give it to him and we do, I'd say odds are good that he's going to choose us.

What if he gets the job and wants to trade Drummond? We'd have to live with that right?

This would definitely be the best coaching hire we've made in over a decade.

Basically, with hiring SVG, we'd be the Howard-era Magic 2.0. Plus, he'd get rid of boneheads that try to feud with him like Smiss does.

That means jumpshooting with Dre in the middle. Nice.

This could be true, but given the credibility level of Woj, I don't think that's the case here. Maybe if it was Chris Broussard, but Woj usually only reports stuff that is confirmed and about to happen.

I can't blame the Pistons for trying because I think SVG is a decent coach, but I don't see him going there. A lot of these coaches once established seem like they only want to cherry pick the jobs where they think they can win right away. Its the Phil Jackson model to coaching greatness, stack the deck. If they can't get the job they want these guys just hang out and do TV which ensures there name is brought up every time a coach gets fired.

I kind of doubt SVG has the guts to take on a challange like Det from a roster stand point. It might damage the mistique of his reputation.

What if the GM we sign wants to trade Drummond? At least Van Gundy has proven he knows about basketball, there a lot of GMs who got to prove that.

Gores would have to approve of something like that.
