sheed deserves to stay. he did wonders for dre's development in the post this season. the players love him, and from all accounts, most coaches hold him in high regard due to his wealth of knowledge of the game.

There isnt a better coach on Planet Earth for Monroe & Drummond than Rasheed. Just because we ignored Drummond doesnt mean Sheed didnt help him improve big time offensively.
Letting him go would be a step below signing Josh in idiotic moves.

It depends on what other options are available...
Sheed did a good job with J.O. in Portland.
I was amazed that he was able to keep his mouth shut on the sidelines (any techs?).

The fact that SVG can be such a hard ass and Sheed can be such a clown is a good contrast to have.

Dre needs a coach, not a buddy. I think the Sheed love is more based on 2004 and his personality than his coaching. As a player, he so often did what you didn't want your big guy doing.
I'd honestly like to see someone more serious and professional, and that would be good for Dre.

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Re: Any chance SVG will keep Sheed as an assistant coach?
I hope Sheed stays. He's been good for Drummond. I didn't get the impression he was coaching Drummond to jack up threes at all. Drummond is a totally different talent from Sheed. Sheed shot threes because he could hit them with either hand. His game was crazy versatile. He could take bigs off the dribble. He post guys up. He could play high post and be the hub of the offense.
Drummond doesn't have the same skill set. Either way, I'm a little more optimistic with this hire. Hopefully we maintain our pick and make the right trades and signings.

I honestly don't get this sentiment. How many times was Dre playing like complete crap and we saw Sheed lean over into Dre's ear on the bench and have some words, only to have Dre come out playing with his shorts on fire and dominate the game?
Dre clearly has improved under Sheed and it's clear he responds well to him. Isn't that exactly what you want in a coach-player relationship? You think a few scowls and azz bumps after a nasty dunk makes him unprofessional? People were predicting Sheed would lead the team in techs but he rarely even talked like you'd expect. Hell, Sheed could be seen several times coaching Dwight right there on the floor many times while the Pistons played Orlando those years. You don't think Stan was able to take notice those teaching moments and Sheed's ability to neutralize his young big man?

Re: Any chance SVG will keep Sheed as an assistant coach?
I'd like to see Sheed stay just because I like him and thought he did a good job last year. However, if he isn't retained it isn't that big a deal. What Drummond becomes is more dependent on him than on any coach. I'm sure Ewing or others could be a perfectly capable big man coach for Detroit. I'm rooting for Sheed though, as he took his job seriously and caused no problems while Dre made good progress. Kind of an "If it ain't broke" situation.

Re: Any chance SVG will keep Sheed as an assistant coach?
I'm cool if he stays because I trust SVG's judgement in assistant coaches, and cool if he goes because, again, I trust SVG's judgement in assistant coaches. If I was to bet, I say he stays on actually because Dre will go to bat for him a bit, and because Ewing will stay in Charlotte with Clifford and his own project in Jefferson.
I think Sheed and SVG would get along well - really well if they give their relationship time to build. Both are smart as hell, passionate as hell, and loyal as hell. Stan will make Sheed work for it though - Sheed will have to be a dedicated full time coach with real HC aspiration to be willing to put in the work. Like his playing days, he could be great as a coach/eventual HC but I wonder if he would really want it bad enough - it's a lot of unsexy long hours of grunt work with relatively little pay with all the travel as a player still.

Look at Dre's offensive progress this year. Everytime he messed up Sheed was always in his ear, and Dre is always praising Sheed's teaching. Sheed may have gotten lazy later on in his career, but he is without a doubt one of the highest basketball IQ bigmen of his era, and he had a terrific post game.

I'd like to see sheed get another look, but I doubt they keep him on. He seemed to do a decent enough job with player development, but he has baggage. He's always going to be sheed and bring that history with him. He's also tied to the last management team much more closely than your average assistant coach. I'd expect SVG to make a clean break with all of the disfunction and just start fresh.
I like sheed, but lets face it.... he was a player development coach. That is basically the lowest step on the coaching ladder and certainly the easiest to replace. No one really considers him one of those up and coming assistant coaches. Nobody is talking about him as a future head coach. Everyone knows he has a high IQ, but very few people think he has the temperment, drive, and consistency to trudge his way through the coaching ranks.
The other guy that is likely out of the mix is billups. If SVG gets final say and he brings in an experienced GM to handle the day-to-day duties, there doesn't seem to be an obvious "assistant GM" type of spot.

It isn't like it would be the worst thing if SVG goes with his own guys, however..
Having a guy like Rasheed, fairly fresh out of the NBA, still young enough to bang in practice with Dre and Moose and relate to them is a positive.

Hopefully that means SVG respects him. Sheed has already helped Dre develop a nice hook shot and some elementary post moves in just one offseason. He has also been a model citizen on the bench. I will be extremely upset if he doesnt come back as a player development coach.

Re: Any chance SVG will keep Sheed as an assistant coach?
I'd be willing to bet he is kept on with Ewing locked down in Charlotte, along with Clifford - both were considered top big men coaches under SVG and thus both off the market.
I don't know what happened with Brendan Malone not lasting on his son's staff in Sacto - was it health related or did it just not work with the father working under Mike? If Brendan still have the fire to coach in the league, I could see him on SVG's staff here - both because he was on his final staff in Orlando and because of his days here during Bad Boy years.
I also think Stan will use his dual roles here to justify having an associate head coach, which would then allow him to poach an assistant off another teams staff by calling it a promotion to get them here. Either this or he could bring in a recently fired headcoach to be his top assistant like a Mike Brown or Mike Woodson.
There is six openings though for HC gigs, but with SVG hired, we get the pick of the litter for assistants which is valuable as hell.

Yeah you can tell Van Gundy does respect him a lot as a player.
Still haven't heard anything (from the press conference (or any other news source) about his plans for a coaching staff and if Rasheed Wallace will be involved.
