Derrick Chung had two hits and is raising his average. The organization sent him to the AFL last fall despite his age - perhaps in place of Jimenez - but if he can get his average up a bit more, he might be promotable. Supposedly the best defensive catcher in our system, with a great throwing arm to get base stealers out.

Too bad we didn't still have Chien Ming Wang...greatest battery ever Wang Chung. Better than Bud Black and Steve Decker.

Anthony DeSclafani, one of the "throw ins" in the (abysmal) Happ trade, is starting tomorrow for the Marlins. We'll see how he handles the jump from AA to the bigs.

He was traded in the Reyes/Johnson/Buehrle deal.

And he was hardly a throw in.

And he's pitching tonight. Quite well thus far.

Norris went 6.2, gave up one run, 4 hits, 1BB and K'd 6.

It's getting to that point. Sanchez is still walking a lot and not striking out many for a starter with his stuff, while Norris is striking out 11 per 9 and managing to keep the walk rate respectable in A+. If Norris gets promoted to Double-A some time this summer, with a reasonable amount of success, I could see him overtaking Sanchez on prospect lists.

I'd have him above Sanchez at this point. His splits against righties are spectacular right now, which bodes well as he climbs the ladder.

Also, a Nessy sighting in Lansing: his first HR of the year. Speaks to the difficulty of projecting kiddies when you have a guy like him who was, since he was 16, expected to grow into a power hitter who would need to learn the finer points of hitting (and would probably need to move the 1B) and yet at this point is primarily a singles hitter with a good eye and no power.

I'm actually getting a bit worried about Sanchez to be honest. The control is still whacked for him. Huge upside, but he still walks a lot.

I wish we found a way to keep Syndergaard last year. Stroman/Syndergaard/Sanchez/Norris would all be getting closer right now and that is a crap load of high potential young arms that would be getting close to the majors.

Don't forget about Asher Woj who was very impressive in the PCL meat grinder last year. Nicolino could also make it but it's not looking good right now.

It hurts to lose those guys, but I have no problem with AA dealing from a clear position of strength. It's the deals themselves that I had a problem with. With Stroman/Sanchez/Norris, we have good odds at least one will turn out to be a quality major league starter. Between that guy and Hutch, we have the beginnings of a very good (and cheap) major league rotation.

Mentioned Nessy last night, and he's at it again with two more hits including a double. His home run power might not be there, but if he keeps this up (where 'this' = good strike zone control, a surprisingly excellent OBP and good-enough doubles power that hasn't yet translated into home runs) he could be primed for a move. His defensive skills have improved considerably by most accounts, such that he'll stick behind the plate, and he appears to have enough with the bat to merit testing him against higher-level competition.

Isn't the FSL considered a pitchers league, as well? Making it even more impressive.

It's often considered the most pitcher-friendly in the minors, yeah. Big parks, high humidity...it's not coincidental that the FSL and the rookie-level Gulf Coast League rank near on at the bottom in runs scored every year. Heh, it's also likely the reason why we see so many out-of-nowhere pitching prospects collapse on the jump to NH (alongside the reality that the A+ to AA jump is a big one in competitiveness); that middle-in 90 MPH fastball isn't a flyball out anymore.
