Just to add from Vince Ellis' article today -

“The key thing is I’m not going to do both roles,” Van Gundy said. “You can’t even coach a team in the NBA by yourself, and if you tried to, you’re not going to be very good. That’s why hiring a great, great, great staff is imperative, and it’s the same thing on the player personnel side.”

It sounds like SVG is going to allow the GM a lot of autonomy - that his PBO hat is just to protect him from Miami and Orlando situations but that he's not going to pull rank on GM's and do their job - but it's a protection that he'll have the autonomy to coach, the time and space needed, and can't be fired and scapegoated or ultimately over ruled in any turf war if things ever did go south with the GM.

Randy Pfund is another name being thrown out there.

Stan Van Gundy always insisted he would never leave Florida unless he had the chance to coach in a warm-weather city, but when the Pistons offered him $7 million per year to coach and be the team’s top basketball executive, he couldn’t say no. Now he just needs a GM to handle the day-to-day operations. There’s one name we haven’t heard that makes the most sense: Former Heat executive Randy Pfund, who Van Gundy knows from when he was with Miami, when Pfund ran the front office for Pat Riley and Van Gundy was an assistant and head coach. Pfund has been out of the NBA in recent years. If Van Gundy doesn’t bring on Pfund, Phil Jackson definitely should. Jackson still needs to hire a person with GM experience to handle the day-to-day basketball operations. That’s been his plan since he took over the Knicks.

I get the feeling no one really knows who Stan has in mind, and are just throwing out any name with connection to him.
