By 'elite league', I mean one of:

La Liga
Premier League
Bundesliga
Ligue 1
Serie A

Anfield 89 for me

Had to win by two away at Anfield on the last day of the season to beat Liverpool to the title. Michael Thomas scored the clincher in injury time to win the league.

14 la liga was all about who chokes the hardest. three contenders went 1-2-6 last three weeks with only win coming by real after they were out of the race.

I'm not sure 2001 was the best BuLi title race, but god damn did I love seeing Neverkusen prove why they deserve that moniker.

The 99 relegation race is the best race of any kind I've seen. Watching Der Klub get put away like that way just amazing.

Homer choice: 2001 BL. It is brutally sweet losing the 'ship in the 90th and regain it on literally the last play of the season. All other games had ended, and after that FK by Andersson, the game did not restart.

BTW, in terms of absurdity, the 1977/78 BL season takes the cake. Cologne and Gladbach were equal in points, but Cologne was ahead by 10 goals. Cologne won 5:0 but Gladbach annihilated Dortmund with 12:0 - a "meagre" 2:0 Cologne win would have gifted Gladbach the ship.

Serie A 2002, for me.

Btw, there was nothing elite about the Bundesliga in 2001.

1999/2000 Serie A

some unknown Japanese boy buried Juventus title hope in the last match of the season.

You might like to check which team won the CL.

Also Kaiserslautern made the semi-finals in the UEFA Cup, granted they got trashed by Alaves (whatever happened to them btw?). The year after had Leverkusen in the Champions League and Dortmund in the UEFA Cup final. The Bundesliga was pretty good back then.

Alaves mercilessly exposed our 1-dimensional defense. We were great vs high crosses but pathetic vs Spanish style passing. Jordi Cruyff tore us a new one.

2012 Premier League?

Also because it was 2 local rivals that hate each other. Not really the same rivalry between Bayern and Schalke.
Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, Kevin Garnett, Toni Kroos, Pep Guardiola, Ernst Happel, Joachim Löw.

So according to you, when Porto won the Champions League, Portugal had an elite league?

So according to you, when Porto won the Champions League, Portugal had an elite league?

Then explain to me why the Bundesliga was not elite in 2001.

The Bundesliga was a clear level below Serie A back then both in terms of the quality of football being played and strength in depth, and that alone makes it not elite.

We could discuss it in further detail, but i'm worried that we'll eventually just start talking about how Bayern are unbeatable and how the Bundesliga is superior to La Liga again.

So? Being worse than 2001 Serie A makes the Bundesliga not an elite league? Just because the Serie A was amazing back then, you can't say that the Bundesliga was not elite. Right now the Bundesliga is way better than the Serie A, it is still an elite league though.

We clearly have different standards of judgement. I don't believe Serie A is an elite league right now.

Yeah it's just something you can't really be objective about. The 5-year ranking doesn't work either.

For me it's definitely 2012 English Premier League. Just the drama on that final day alone will forever stand out.

It's not an elite league, but the best Greek Super League finish for me is the '07-'08 season. Olympiakos edged Panathinaikos on the final day. That was the season OLY had a loss result reversed to 3 points for us because the team that beat us had fielded an ineligible player. Let's just say PAO fans are still butthurt:

Speaking of the final day. It took us until the 90th minute for us to beat Larisa 2-1. The legend of Kostas Mitroglou was born. He won the title for us:
