You would need to add one of the minimum unguaranteed contracts, because otherwise you can't match the salary within the 125% + 100k rule. Bass+Anthony+Sullinger would equate to the ability to take on $14.62m, Love gets 14.69.

Nice catch

I still think Ibaka/Lamb/pick for Love is being underrated here. Even if OKC fans think it's a no go, I'm not sure their boss does.

Not saying it wouldn't work, but Durant/Westbrook/Love have some of the highest usage rates in the league. It's going to be hard to get enough touches for each.

Just to make things more interesting, Danny Ainge went on the radio today and said:

Completely understandable, pretty much all teams would do that. The question is: How much are they willing to give up for such a player?

Danny Ainge just told us that he would be open to trading for a high caliber player in their last year without an agreement to an extension.

Just said that he was absolutely willing to trade for a star player with an expiring contract without an extension.

Wouldn't OKC ownership be wary of paying three future supermax players?

Okay...pretend you are Kevin Love for a moment.

You grew up in Portland and went to school in LA. So West coast is your prefered local right? Make sense?
You want to play with the best team possible with the best chance of playing for a championship after a deal is made for you correct?
If you could play with a guy you knew as a kid and played with while growing up....wouldn't you want that?
If you could play for a team that has the best starting 5 statisically in the NBA and IMPROVE that starting 5....and play with one of the top 5 point guards in the league....with a legit defensive center....

AND ...the team trading you away can get reasonable value back....thus ensuring you can be signed to a max deal and THEN traded....

Which team fulfills ALL of those requirements? Feel free to fill in the answer.

And now ask every other GM in the league, whether he would trade for an unextended Love, and he would say: YES! The issue here is: What package would you give up for him? That would be interesting to see ...

Given Ainge's past history, probably about the same as if he was extended. It's a matter of confidence that you can re-sign the guy anyway.

If they're not trading Thompson, what is the "reasonable value"?

The implication is that it starts with the #6 pick.

Assuming Love is dead set on free agency, regardless of what team he is sent to, what other team is going to offer more without any assurance of an extension?

I can't see many teams willing to put up anything that valuable without assurances, so it's kind of a big statement from Danny that he would be willing to make that gamble.

Ainge also said during the interview he absolutely thinks he can convince a player to resign in Boston.

So yeah, I think confidence is a big part of it.

1. That is terrible management, that would get Flip Saunders fired real quickly for it. Thankfully GMs are more professional than that.

2. You got the 6th overall pick in the 2009 draft in that deal + Al Jefferson. May not have worked out, but those were some damn good assets.

Ignore him. Most Wolves fans are actually objective and could care less where Love goes as long as the team getting him gives us the best package.

What does that have to do with anything?

The Celtics have some of the best assets of any team looking to trade for Love. Acting like that would never happen is stupid.

Except it has been widely reported that most teams wouldn't agree to a Kevin Love trade unless Love agreed to an extension.

Obviously teams would take Love for a bargain price even unextended, but Ainge's comments made it clear that he had no problem paying a premium for an unextended Love...something we haven't heard from anywhere else.

Okay...pretend you are the Minnesota Timberwolves for a moment.

Why on earth would you settle for a lesser package to make Love, the guy who wants to leave your team, happy?

Management must accept the offer that best sets up the Wolves for the future. Anything else is incompetence.

Wolves only need to look at one requirement... whats the best package for Kevin Love, whatever Love does after that is none of their business.
