San Antonio Spurs Offense

Wow is it a thing of beauty, i know SVG ran a similar offense in 08 and 09 with Orlando but didnt have the inside scoring like the Spurs do and maybe not quite the passing either. Any chance he tries to replicate what the Spurs have done?? i know we dont have many skilled guys on this team but you gotta believe he's going to try something similar

It's about putting together a team and not just talent like SVG said. Those are all high character players that strive in a good system. Obviously Duncan and Parker have had great careers. But that organization and Pops can get the best out of just about anyone.

Funny what happens when you have stable ownership, stable front office, stable coaching, stable roster...

They don't just acquire quality players...they develop them aswell.

SVG has stated he would love to spend time with Pop & Buford, just to pick their brains.

San Antonio has play sets designed for its personnel. It just so happens to be that their star players are playing quite well for some time now. Detroit has run motion and horns play sets for some time as do other teams.

However, San Antonio has several wrinkles or contingencies based on how the defense reacts to a play. For example, a horns give and go can turn into a P&R, and I've seen Diaw pop out beyond the arc if Duncan's presence in the high post causes a double team. From there, each of the players know where everyone is at, and execute crisp passes.

It's pretty awesome to watch. Van Grundy could copy some plays here and there, but execution is more important than anything else. That's the difference maker.

It's something that you develop over time...with the same personnel

Assuming we have Drummond, Monroe, KCP & 1 other player here for the next 5 years I'd imagine our offense would look crisp and clean too.

People seem to think you can chop & change key players every off-season and be successful...it doesn't work that way

Guys. As simple as it looks, you're forgetting the coach of the team. Pop, IMO, is better than Phil Jackson. Jackson can't do what pop is doing. It's pretty incredible. Yes, it's simple. But you need a foundation. What happens when Duncan retires? They'll probably tank hard and get new players to keep for another two decades lol. But what happens when Pop retires? No coach can replace him.

I think Pop is the GOAT coach, maybe only Riley could stand in front of him. Jackson was great, but he always won with the best player in the NBA on his roster.

Just an amazing tribute video. I think every fan despite team, can always root for the Spurs. It's just quality and unselfish basketball. It also helps the whole team can move the rock at an above average rate. Manu is a wizard/jedi with his passes.

In terms of coaches, I think Pop has a chance to be GOAT, same as PJax and Riley of course. The next tier down would probably be Carlisle who is also terrific. He took this Spurs team to 7 games after all.

SVG is a good coach, but he didn't run the same system as the Spurs. He ran a system that basically surrounded Dwight with a tonne of shooters, it was nowhere near as crisp and complex as the Spurs motion offense.

It's not the same system & I don't think anyone puts SVG up with Pop but:

It's not easy to put Rhyno & Redick & Lewis & Nelson around Dwight and make them dominant.

According to most Redick & Rhyno are poor defenders & Lewis & Nelson weren't much better...yet they won big!

It's not a simple case of jacking 3s!

The Manu Ginobli 3 at the end of the 4th to take the lead was also a thing of beauty. When I watch the Spurs I realize how far far away the Pistons are from competing. Dont have near the skill inside or outside as well as team IQ. I will also not be satisfied with Detroit until they get back to a Spurs level of play
