Re: Official Pierce & KG Thread
I applaud Paul and KG for their leadership.
But in hindsight, that price was so steep that it wasn't worth it to bring these guys in here.

It was if the premise was that Brook would be our #1A and Deron was our #1B.
Needless to say, Lopez was done for the year and Deron was...well, Deron. As soon as it became apparent that those two would fail to meet their respective expectations, then Paul/KG automatically became a long-shot to help the team.
If KG retires and Paul opts to go elsewhere, yes it was an expensive rental, but those 1st round picks' value can be re-couped.

The trade was worth it, even in hindsight. i mean lets look at it from all angles, not just losing to miami:
1) We were over the tax through 2015. we had 0 shot to do anything. our only chance to be decent was to add high price rentals who expire before 2015 to help now without pushing our cap problems into 2016.
2) We got more then pierce and garnett. that deal also moved Gerald Wallace's salary, which is huge because it gives us a very good chance ot get under the luxury tax in 2015, to go after plays via sign and trade. this can not be overlooked. We also, inderectly got thornton, who is a good bench player while also benig a very attractive 8M expiring at next years trade deadline
3) The picks we gave up are:
2014, non lottery, in the 20's
2016, at a point where we will then have cap space
2018, so far down the road we likely dont have 1 player on this roster who will still be around
those picks dont effect us much. the 2014 hurts the most and its in the mid 20's. we likely even buy or trade into this draft near or higher then that pick.
1 mid 20's pick now and 2 picks well down the road isnt a bad trade, even in hindsight when you consider our situation this year and being able to get under the tax in 15 cause we moved wallace. if we make a sign and trade and 2015 for a big name player, you can thank this trade.

Re: Official Pierce & KG Thread
They should talk to Garnett about a buyout.
Kevin is maybe the wealthiest active player or at least one of them (Kobe?). For agreeing to a buyout of maybe 0-4 million, he can try to find a better situation and take an exception or vet minimum and contend again, and the Nets could lower their giant tax payment. The Nets could bring Blatche back and just not split the minutes up as much.
Alternatively, they could work with KG to try to trade him to a team that will buy him out in an arrangement he'd be fine with (again, it would probably have to be ~0-4 mil).

It's actually pick #17.

ok so 17... same point though. losing out on the 17th pick isnt going to kill you. especially if you buy into the back end of the draft, and have a euro prospect (bogdanovic) ready to come over.

We're still on the hook for a pick swap in 2015 from the JJ trade though, and Boston also has the option to swap picks in 2017. If they rebuild nicely and are back in the playoffs in 2017, and we end up in the lottery (say we strike out on free agents), that could end very badly for us.

If we dont have a playoff team in 2017 we have ALOT more to worry about then swapping picks with Boston.
It would mean that we either locked in to the guys we have and given lopez and extension and resigned williams or it means we would made another set of terrible trades where we took on long term salary of marginal players. It would also mean we missed out on Love, Durant, Dwight and everyone else in that free agent class... or that we suffered devestating injuries to our best players.
the 2015 pick, sure that could suck cause there is absolutely a scenario were we miss the playoffs and atlanta doesnt. but 2017, man, if we arent a playoff team then, we are in deep crap

The #17 pick this year was Dennis Schroder. Imagine missing out on a player like that?
I had no problem with the trade, we gave ourselves a great opportunity this year to compete. Thank Deron and Lopez's foot for us not advancing further.
Also the trade showed the league and future FAs that this ownership is willing to spend more than any other team including LAL and NYK. That will pay off when enticing big name FAs. Also, it has helped build popularity and a bigger fan base.
+ Gerald Wallace.

Re: Official Pierce & KG Thread
The trade looked great until you started to factor in the 2016/2018 pick situation.
I think this season showed you don't need a lotto pick sometimes to land a very good rookie prospect. So, even though we are may end up swapping picks that doesn't necessarily mean you won't end up with a good player.
I think in the end, we will come out of this pick situation unscathed but we really have to put together a good team in 2016 or before.

Re: Official Pierce & KG Thread
The New York Post reports that "all indications" are that the Ticket will return for the final year of his deal at $12 million.
Still, all indications have been — despite the drop in production this season — Garnett will be back in Brooklyn for what would be the 20th season of his stellar NBA career. It would be easy to see Garnett agreeing to rejoin Pierce for one final season in Brooklyn before riding off into the sunset next summer.

Because it's the NY Post, I take it with a grain of salt. With that said, if it's true it would be a sigh of relief. It would be the 2nd sign (the 1st being D-Will getting surgery) that the offseason wouldn't be a total failure.
I look forward to seeing what are big man rotation looks like when the dust from the offseason settles and we're heading into the regular season.

Hmmm.
If KG stays, Paul will stay.
That means you guys may be stuck with me for another year.

KG's limited minutes are going to look a lot better when he's backing up Lopez or splitting time with an improved Plumlee. His offense isn't going to pop out but his passing, defense and energy make him a still really good player. It's too bad the national media sees lower stats or a couple of bad games and thinks he's done and should retire.

You're welcome here anytime. They are playing for an organization which is committed to winning. The fact they have the highest tax bill and are overspending shows you they do not care what it's going to take to get it done. If Dwill comes back healthy as well as Brook and these two come back, we will definitely improve from the 44 win season we had. If healthy, I project a 55 win record for next season.
The issues which existed in November/December of 2013 won't be there. The chemistry has developed and communication on offense and defense is there; of course, execution down the stretch will be another factor but something they can absolutely work on.
