How to make Detroit Relevant & Eye Popping again

I think the Detroit Pistons (My Favorite Team) have potential to be one of the top five teams in the League. The problem we have is similar to New York's problem. We don't have enough "Fundamental Talent". And by that I mean, we have too many players that are Talented but are not consistent with there talent. To be a contender we need more Fundamental Players but consistent ones. Move Josh Smith to the 4 spot and get a True Small Forward. Josh brings great character & attitude to Detroit's presence. I think a smart move would be to try and get Harrison Barnes at the 3. He's Young, Explosive, and with the right Guidance he can be a unstoppable force for the Detroit Pistons. We can also use a veteran shooting guard, no disrespect to Chauncey Billups. But someone younger & more of a scorer. Someone like Deron Williams or Monte Ellis. And I'd also look into searching for talent in crazy places. I know this sounds crazy but I'd try getting And 1 street Baller phenomenon "Hot Sauce" to come off the bench & provide distribution some fancy points. Thinking outside the box. I don't know what it would take for these things to come true. But I'm almost positive it'll be a masterpiece.

Thinking outside the box.

I'm not even going to bother replying to the rest of the post. Other people have that covered.

Our problem for years has been a refusal to think 'inside the box'. We've always gone for the home run play and taken cast-offs from other teams:

Ben Gordon
Charlie Villanueva
Brandon Jennings (sort of)
Josh Smith

I realize you could argue that Billups, Rip, B.Wallace and Rasheed were castoffs in their own way but they were all much less risky than the four above. All of them had played well with their previous teams prior to signing with Detroit.

Just once I would like our front office to try the following:
1. Sign but do not overspend on free agents that help the team. Retain your core young talent from previous years and develop it further.
2. If suitable long term free agents can't be found, sign guys to 1 year prove-it contracts and wait till next year. Those guys will either pan out or won't but they won't be a long term detriment to the team.
3. Draft guys with a solid college pedigrees that at least have a chance of translating to the next level. The only exception is an amazing young kid who likely goes in the top 3 anyway.
4. Play the young kids often throughout the season. Provide an environment of stability -- no questionable or unpredictable rotations -- no sitting for extended periods unless the kid did something specific that warrants it and he knows it.
5. Preach fundamentals and no crazy schemes. Don't bring in goofy players that would be a sideshow/distraction to the team.

This is all in the box thinking. You'd think it would be obvious but we really haven't done it for about 10 years.
